As of today 12 April 2016 Window 7 SP1 hangs in searching for updates.  Unlike other postings in 2015, their is no Orchestrator service in services.msc.  Prior to today Windows update was working fine.  Why is this happening?  Is there any other way to get these updates.  I have restarted the OS to no benefit.

If you already have those installed try installing this first by Downloading your 32bit or 64bit update first then try. I had the same problem and tried the Windows fixit and didn't work and caused more issues. So I restored my computer to a week or 2 before then I tried this suggestion and it started working with no issues right away. If not then try some of his other suggestions. It saved me hours of frustration.

    Hope this helps.

if Windows 7 have troubles to find updates, causing high CPU or RAM usage with the process Svchost.exe, it is due that Windows Update was not able to update automatically the Windows Update Client.

in this case, you need to download the update manually, this is the most recent version for now: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3138612

Apr 12 , win update stopped working.  This solution works. WHY did this issue occur, beats me but this community makes things happen.

I think sooner or later i will move to win 10, hope that system is easier to keep updating!!

    SOLVED:

    Windows 7 SP1 64

Extremely frustrated all day yesterday trying every solution posted on the Internet. Then this morning I found this comment on Softpedia's website and it absolutely works (very easy - but why should we have to do this?):

To resolve this issue: first install KB3145739 manually. Go to Microsoft website to download and then install, even if your Installed History already shows this update.

Next you should restart and finally you can check for updates in manual mode.

It takes between 5 or 10 minutes.

P.S. I joined the Microsoft community today specifically to post this solution. Hopefully it will help some people avoid hours or days of frustration or drastic, complicated but unnecessary troubleshooting steps.mm

I was delighted to find this solution and grateful to those who passed it along to all of us.  I had the same problem with March's 2nd Tuesday, but didn't have to do anything to straighten it out -- just reported it on here and all was well by the next day.  But KB145739 was what seemed to fix the problem in April.

One other thing should be added to Chooky's instructions -- take your WU update checking OFF of automatic; change it to "Never check for updates" under settings, then restart your computer before doing the manual stand-alone update KB3145739.

Let's hope for better this coming month, eh?  ;-)
