New Win7 install will not do windows update ***FINALLY FIXED***

Like others (long lisst on this board....), I have no luck doing windows update after wiping my HD and re-loading Win7 from fresh.  This is an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe MB with 3 Gb of memory with AMD64/4400+  Athlon 64 processor  with OS on a Kingston 120 Gb SSDNow 300 SSD.  Win7 is with SP1.

This will happens with no other software installed (i.e. anti-virus) and immediately after OS installation..  No problem at all with any hardware in “Device Manager”.  The machine will communicate with the web just fine since I went directly to MS and download/ install IE11 which is working and e-mail is also working.  I have tried:

  1. Windows Update Troubleshooter does not work.
  2. Occationally I get error code 8007000E but none of what it says can cause it applies here i.e. language, memory, anti-virus, etc.
  3. MS  “Fix it” – does not work

I MS no longer supporting new win7 installs?

    ..I gave up on the OS and deleted and reformatted the drive (via the OS install).  Re-install the OS but this time completely disconnected from the web.  Loaded an old version of Nortons from a CD...

    Update for Microsoft Windows (KB976902)

    1. What installation media did you use to "reinstall the OS?"
    2. When does your current Norton subscription (if any) expire?
    3. Is Win7 32-bit or Win7 64-bit install now?  See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827218
    4. KB976902 is a Win7 SP1 prerequisite update. Are you running Windows 7 or Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) at the moment? See...

    I've deleted the updates that downloaded but failed to update.  Tried again overnight to update and ended up with 240 downloads most but not all failed to update.  Windows tried but ended up saying:

    "Failure configurating Windows Update, Reverting changes, do not turn off your computer"

    At that point, I gave up on the OS and deleted and reformatted the drive (via the OS install).  Re-install the OS but this time completely disconnected from the web.  Loaded an old version of Nortons from a CD (it's the only one I have from 2015).  When it was running, I made sure all the hardware in Device Manager was with proper drives and then connected to the web and updated Norton's so that it is up to date.  Next activated Windows (no problem), then hit the Windows Update button.  It's now been running for the last 4 hours and I intend to let it run for at least a day or more and see what happens.

    I did check Update History and it looks like "Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320" loaded successfully by itself.

    Two items in Installed Updates:

    Update for Microsoft Windows (KB976902)

    Hoping for the best.  I really cannot improve on this...
