I accidently uninstalled Windows Defender for Windows 10. How do I reinstall it?

    Yes, this happened to me, too. Apparently, Win 10 thinks Spybot is anti-virus, even though I just installed the free (no anti-virus) version. Even if you uninstall Spybot, there is a program that periodically asks you to reinstall it.

     I removed all mention of Spybot that I could find from the registry, but still can't start Defender.

    Windows Defender was turned off when I installed Spybot Search & Destroy.

    I don't think so - unless you turned it off.

    I have tried the solution you provided above, but when I try to start the service, I get an error #577 stating that windows cannot verify a digital signature for a file.

    Windows Defender was turned off when I installed Spybot Search & Destroy
