This does not seem to be working for me.
It isn't asking for Firmware update; the device is now a black screen, and can not sync.
Zune: generation 1, 30gb, model 1089.
(I'm trying to read all posts but my head is spinning. If I missed something, I apologize.)
I already have Win7 installed, so I skipped the step of making fresh partition and installation.
Zune is extra-bricked. Here's what happened:
It froze. To unfreeze, I tried to reset. Back+Up didn't seem to work. I tried Play+Up; which reformatted my device with no warning.
At this point, it WAS asking for firmware update.
Plugged device into PC. Zune Software could not sync to server. Tried re-plugging several times while talking to tech support. Then error message changed to "not enough space". Then device went to black screen.
So now, instead of my device asking for initial setup and firmware update; it is a black screen.
Zune Software does not see my device properly. In Settings\Update, is says: "To view this setting, connect a device."
Device Manager\Portable devices sees my device, with custom name. But seems to say that the firmware installed is 4.8 (it should be 3.3 or earlier).
Attempted to use Device Manager to Update Driver Software, but it only gives choices of v. 4.2-4.8, (I need 3.3).
DracoBaseline.cab seems to be 3.3 .
So it appears I need to force flash my device with firmware 3.3, without the use of the Zune software app.
Please help.

well ... first off all dude... ITS NOT MANDATORY to be in win 7 anymore. zune software checks microsoft signature to run and to install zune firmware. there is no other way than with zune soft to recover zune devices. second one: zune 1st gen were only updated to 3.3 . 4.8 its for other zune s like hd . tell this because i got one hd and one first gen like yours
btw... if its fullbricked maybe you got a hdd problem. or data corrupt. zunes 1st gen have hdd. zune hds has a flashrom . i think its not a matter with firm. try mega package and google " erase all data in zune first gen. not in zune soft. erase directly from zune deevice.
Will someone post a clear step by step instructions list? I have followed the previous post and honestly it was lousy directions. Nice that some people tried their best to show its done but the "revert to pages" is not help when errors come up. It is not difficult to write a clear instruction manual and possible errors that people will come across, I write toolkits for PLC's so I know it isn't difficult.
