for all you guys that need to restore your zune. ya need to do a 20 gigs partition with win 7 ultimate updated +.net framework all versions installed + zune software 4.8 + firmware update installing msi (x86 or x64)  :

update 04/09/2016 :

  1. make a 20 gigs partition on  hdd
  2. .install win 7 ultimate edition 
  3. install net framework 3.5.1 + all win 7 updates.

4 . install zune software 4.8 and zune firmware msi- (x86 obviously in 32 bit or -x64 in 64 bit system)

  1. plug the zune to computer. it will be downloading the last version of zune drivers
  2. start zune software and update screen will be displaying in main zune softs screen . thats it. 

when you double click zune  firmware-x86 or x64 the msi package install FW .cab files in: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Zune\Firmware Updates 

and firmware update.xml emulates online mode for restoring ;D 

EDIT: FIRMWARE OFFLINE RECOVERY WILL WORK ONLY ON WIN 7.

    okay dude . made my research about content that you posted. got new version of offline restoring firmware . works on win 10 too. congrats . ya expanded horizon for me ;D.

    next step for ya is installing the little zune hd app package i posted and zune software tunning ;D. i will be posting links about anything i can find for zunes :D . images on page 2 are just a little taste of lots of mods  you can do

    It's thanks to your posts that I succeed in the end, wish it would have worked the other way for me, would have saved a lot of messing about.

    But I'm happy I have a working Zune again, can't believe MS turned the firmware servers off knowing the issues it would cause.

    ummmm .... glad to hear that worked for ya mate ;D . i did it the "easy way" lolol. thanks for posting your results about using alternate steps ;D . im glad we are doing mics zune supporting job lol.

    Must admit I can't get this working the way you described.

    But for others that can't get this working in this way there is an alternative way which takes a little more effort and I've just done it and have a working ZuneHD again :)

    Basically you are fooling the Zune software into going to your local web server to do the updates.  

    1. Install Abyss web server, configure to port 80
    2. Deposit firmware files and xml files in correct place, see links below for this info.
    3. Update your host file to point resources.zune.net to 127.0.0.1 (your local machine)
    4. Start zune software and it works.

    My own additions to the above would be that you have to ensure port 80 on your machine is free. In my case on windows 7 I had to stop the www publishing service to free up port 80. (pid4) I also had issues with my local proxy, using wireshark enabled me to make sure the sure software was accessing my local machine along with some nbtstat - R  and just in case did a  ipconfig /flushdns to clear caches of previous un-working web addresses.
