1. Sort of—I get a screen that is about scanning it. I get a home page saying “Real time protection is off.”
2. Yes. When I access Windows Firewall, I get “These settings are being managed by a vendor product Kaspersky Internet Security.” (Private networks are connected but Public ones are not.) JUST found another way to access Windows Firewall and it says it is OFF!

5. Nope, no disk came with the refurbed computer.

FYI: I have tried running Windows Update with Kaspersky "paused" and that didn't change the outcome. Previously, I had to pause Kaspersky when adding account profile information...but only to one account.

[After resetting Windows Update, a manual check for updates offered fifteen (15) Important updates and one (1) Optional update...two (2) of the Important updates (i.e., KB3114442 & KB915597) and the one (1) Optional update successfully installed.]...ALL of the failed installs were MS office updates...I still don't have 2 of your listed updates which were part of the failed group: KB3114893 & KB3115465.

1. Can you open (access) Windows Defender?
2. Is the Windows Firewall enabled (turned on)?

• If all were well with the computer and the install of Kaspersky Internet Security [and I think that is NOT the case!], Windows Defender & Firewall should be disabled and Windows Update should NOT be offering any updates for Windows Defender (i.e., KB915597)!

3. Open Update History (which should NOT be blank/empty now) and double-click on the line for failed update KB3114893. What error number is displayed in the resulting DETAILS window?
4. Open Update History and double-click on the line for failed update KB3115465. What error number is displayed in the resulting DETAILS window?
5. You do NOT have an Office 2007 disk (DVD/CD), is that correct?

Thanks for all the tips. I had completed 1-6 and with the new tutorial completed the download of option #3.

It did wipe the update history.

I already had in my installed updates KB3176443, KB3178034, and KB3177725, done 8/11/16.

After completing option #3: The manual update suggested one optional and 15 important updates.

All of these downloaded (that's what has been happening--never a download issue)

But only 3 installed: the optional and 2 of the important ones.

ALL of the failed installs were MS office updates.

However, one of the successful updates WAS an MS Office update: KB3114442.

The other important update that installed successfully was Windows Defender.

I attempted the install of the failed updates and they all failed again. I still don't have 2 of your listed updates which were part of the failed group: KB3114893 & KB3115465.

So, I've completed your 1-9 list but still having only a few updates that install.

Other ideas?

Sorry, but I'm not surprised. Microsoft's been "rearranging the deck chairs" again & things are still pretty scr3wed up IMHO. [The original Windows Update troubleshooter was "disappeared" from all English-US KB articles, etc., but not from at least one German-language KB. Go figure.]

That being said and assuming you've completed Steps #1 thru #6 by now, try Option 3 in this tutorial instead => http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/91738-windows-update-reset.html

...then run a manual check for updates, etc., etc.
