Top Request: Navigate music collections by folder in the Groove app

Week after week we hear the request to add the ability to navigate music collections by folder in the Groove app. We're thinking about how to build it the right way and would love more detailed feedback.

How do you organize your collection by folder? A folder per album? A folder per artist? A folder by season?

Once we expose your folder structure in Groove, how do you expect to interact with them? Play buttons on each folder? Should your folders be included in the "Add to" menus?

    This is the fundamental problem with Groove. You can do all this (and much more) in MediaMonkey and many other programs right now. The issue is that Groove subscription tracks do not play in or show up in other programs. There is no re-tagging of DRM tracks. You can't re-tag a Kelly Clarkson rock Christmas album as only "Christmas" so it does not play in your auto-generated "Rock" playlist.

    The basic issue in all of this is tags. Some programs adjust your carefully constructed tags automatically---destroying your system. Some mis-tag. Some don't handle compilation albums (various artists---etc), some can't handle multiple disc albums. If tags were full-featured and consistent, virtual folders would be great.

    I believe many users resorted to physical folders because they gave up on elaborate tagging as a solution to organization.

    Whatever MS comes up with, they absolutely cannot abandon tagging. That is the gold standard of organization.

    I think the key word is that it shouldn't be fixed with a single format that should be use, I think the nice thing would be to be able to add stuff in a tree folder way,

    One way that I would like to be able to use is

    Good music\Slow music\song

    Good music\techno favorites\song

    Good music\techno favorites\blues ones\song

    Good music\Ariana\song

    So that I could play all the songs in the Good music if I want or just play a single subfolder if I just want one, and not have to add it to different playlist that I need to keep nice, but only one place..

    It can be a bit complicated with me.

    * If I have a lot songs from one type of genre, then all music in one folder named after that genre.

    * If I have complete albums, then all songs in album in one folder named after that album, that folder is then nested in        one folder named after that artist.

    * If I have a lot of music (not complete albums) from one artist, then all music in one folder named after that artist.i.e.:

    i.e.

    Music/Rock

                 |

                  --various songs from various rock artists

              /Beatles

                 |

                  --Hard Day's Night

                     |

                      --all songs from album

              /Elvis Presley

                 |

                   --various songs from Elvis Presley

    My music is stored on OneDrive as:

    Genre > Artist > Year - Album > (songs on album)

    I've used this layout for years, even wrote a desktop app to traverse this folder structure to play the album/song I'm wanting to hear.  I prepend the year to the album folder for sorting purposes.

    Hey. Navigate by folder, when in addition to navigate by tag, helps fix tagging errors. Eg right now I have some compilations, like the Prince of Egypt soundtrack, that simply refuse to show up in the same album. But if you let me "jump to folder", boom there they all would be.

    Pair that with ID3 editing and I  could  fix the tags.
