For weeks now keep getting the message:

"Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602 (Definition 1.213.5087.0) - Error 0x80070643"

While the computer seems to run ok, in the mean time I cannot update windows 10...

    Hi Arvid (et al),

    If it is all types of Windows Updates, then try the following:

    The most common cause is a problem with and the need to repair the .NET Framework.  Automatically click on the below link and follow the instructions.  Repair .NET Framework

    In C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, find and delete the contents (but not the folders themselves) of ONLY the following two folders: Downloads and DataStore.

    This MAY help resolve the problem if it is caused by an incomplete or stuck update - but it is not guaranteed to fix the update problem because at this point we don't really know the cause. This is one cause and there are many others that this procedure won't resolve. When done, reboot and try updates again and see if they now work. This could do the trick.

    If all else fails, please start here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058 and use the automatic or manual procedure to reset update components.

    Reboot and see if that helps.

    If the issue involves only Defender updates, a common cause involves issues are remnants from or the existence of remnants from some additional prior AV real-time program installation.  To fix this, if it is the problem, please see http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/wiki/mse-protect_start/list-of-anti-malware-product-removal-tools/2bcb53f7-7ab4-4ef9-ab3a-6aebfa322f75 and make sure you run these additional removal tools as applicable - rebooting between each one {and in cases like this, I usually specifically recommend AppRemover and ESET AV Removal Tool also because many are surprised by what they discover on their systems}.

    I had to stop Malwarebytes, put Defender in, update Defender, stop it, and reinstall Malware. Seems ok now.
