Windows 8.1 won't update

My laptop won't update the normal updates.  I have tried running the windows update troubleshooter, it says it fixed a couple of things but it still won't update any updates.  We've also tried upgrading to windows 10, but that doesn't work either.  I've had to turn off the automatic updates, otherwise it says it updating, then says failure to update, undoing changes and takes absolutely ages to boot up.  Any ideas anyone?

    OK. Could you do the following please.

    1. Hit Windows key + X and go to "Command Prompt (Admin)".
    2. Type (or copy and then right click and paste): net stop wuauserv and hit Enter.
    3. Copy/paste: rename c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old
    4. Copy/paste: net start wuauserv
    5. Copy/paste: net stop BITS
    6. Copy/paste: net start BITS
    7. Reboot the computer and then try and install Windows Updates again.

    Okay, so I did the above, and tried to install 1 of the updates and it worked.  I then tried a batch of updates and it didn't work, but they no longer appear in the list that needs to be updated.  I tried another 3 on their own and 2 updated  and one didn't.

    OK. Can you do the following please.

    1. Open Windows Update and then click the link to View update history.
    2. Click the Status header to sort the list with Failedat the top (you might have to click it twice).
    3. Double click one of the ones which failed to install which will launch a small window which contains a code.
    4. Take a screenshot of that and then upload it here.

    The easiest way to take a screenshot of a small area is to use the built-in tool called snipping tool. To launch it, hit Windows key to take you to the Metro interface and then type snipping tool anywhere on the screen. You'll see it appear on the right hand side. You might want to right click it first and click either "Pin to Start" or "Pin to taskbar" to make it easier to use a second time.

    When the snipping tool launches click New. The screen will subsequently be overlaid with a transparent film. Use the mouse to draw a rectangle around the window containing the code I mentioned in step 3. When you let go of the mouse button it takes the screenshot. Click File ---> Save As, give it a name and save it somewhere.

    Then come back here, click the second button from the right at the top above the message box and then navigate to where you saved the image and then upload it here please.
