Windows 8.1 won't update

My laptop won't update the normal updates.  I have tried running the windows update troubleshooter, it says it fixed a couple of things but it still won't update any updates.  We've also tried upgrading to windows 10, but that doesn't work either.  I've had to turn off the automatic updates, otherwise it says it updating, then says failure to update, undoing changes and takes absolutely ages to boot up.  Any ideas anyone?

    Maybe there's some info in Event Viewer which might serve to figure out why it won't install.

    1. So in Event Viewer expand Windows logs ---> Setup
    2. Right click Setup ---> Click Filter current log.
    3. Change Anytime to something which reflects the last time you tried to install KB3146723.
    4. Checkmark: Warning.
    5. In Event sources, checkmark WUSA in the list.
    6. Click OK.

    Theoretically you should only see log files for KB3146723 since everything else has been installed.

    If Warning doesn't produce any results, checkmark Error instead.

    I forgot the bit about right clicking the log file and click Copy --> Copy details as text and then to post it here.

    I notice it says in this log that computer requires a restart to complete the installation.  It does restart, and does the windows is configuring updates bit, but then it says failure to configure windows updates, undoing changes (that's what it's done on all files that fail to update.
