Windows 8.1 won't update

My laptop won't update the normal updates.  I have tried running the windows update troubleshooter, it says it fixed a couple of things but it still won't update any updates.  We've also tried upgrading to windows 10, but that doesn't work either.  I've had to turn off the automatic updates, otherwise it says it updating, then says failure to update, undoing changes and takes absolutely ages to boot up.  Any ideas anyone?

    Could you do the following please.

    1. Open a Command Prompt (Admin).
    2. Type: chkdsk /f and hit Enter.

    You'll get a message that a diags check can't be run because the volume is in use and whether you want to perform a scan on the next restart. Type Y and hit Enter.

    The scan will only take about 5 mins usually after which the system will boot to the desktop.

    1. Next step is to right click the Start button and click Event Viewer.
    2. Expand Windows logs and click Application at the top to select it.
    3. Right click Application and click Find.
    4. Type: Wininit and click Find Next.
    5. When it finds the log file right click that and click Copy ---> Copy details as text.This will copy the log contents to the Windows clipboard.
    6. Come back here, right click and click Paste.

    If you want to keep a copy for yourself open Notepad right click in that and click Paste.

    The object here is to check whether your hard disk has any errors on it which might be interfering with both Windows Update and the time server.

    It's 0.3 seconds behind.

    I don't really know if Sophos has a firewall, I can't see anything in the menus about configuring firewall.  It's one that we use at work that we can also use on our home computers.

    Here's something to try. Go to this site which will immediately show if your computer's time is accurate or not: http://time.is/

    A few seconds either ahead or behind is neither here nor there. My own system is 1.8 seconds behind it seems.

    No problem with that at all, but does Sophos AV include a firewall? Some firewalls can block  polling which takes place when Windows time tries to synchronize with the server.

    If it does include a firewall, you would need to configure it to unlock NTP access on UDP port 123. NTP is an acronym for Network Time Protocol.

    Yes I pressed the start button in the services menu, I had to press stop first though and then start, but it still says error in the sync bit.

    I'm using Sophos antivirus, but I've used that since I had the laptop and had no problems before.
