Windows 8.1 won't update

My laptop won't update the normal updates.  I have tried running the windows update troubleshooter, it says it fixed a couple of things but it still won't update any updates.  We've also tried upgrading to windows 10, but that doesn't work either.  I've had to turn off the automatic updates, otherwise it says it updating, then says failure to update, undoing changes and takes absolutely ages to boot up.  Any ideas anyone?

    Xircal, I performed the DISM.exe/Online/Cleanup-image/Restorehealth and received Error: 112 There is not enough space on the disk. The DISM log file can be foun at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log. Now what do I do?

    Hi Julie,

    I haven't forgotten you.

    Try doing the following to force KB3146723 to install.

    First of all, make sure the April 2015 servicing stack update KB3021910 is already installed. If it isn't, download manually from here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3021910

    Then move the other one to the Downloads folder.

    Next, right click the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin).

    Type: net stop wuauserv and hit Enter. You should see the message that "Windows Update service is stopping".

    Leave the command prompt open and then run Windows8.1-KB3146723-x64.msu from the Downloads folder assuming you still have it on your system. If you haven't download it again from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=51888

    If you still get a problem, perform a 'clean boot' and then try and install it the same way. In case you don't know how, see this support article: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

    When you run net stop wuauserv the update you're trying to install will automatically restart it again.

    There's no need to run wusa.exe to install the file and just double clicking the .msu file should be enough.

    If Windows 10 fails to install using the file downloaded from Windows Update, you can create your own installation media with this tool:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

    However, it's advisable to check HP's support site for additional information regarding the updgrade. Your Windows Update log identifies your computer as a Pavilion 15, but it doesn't state which model it is.

    Also, the Pavilion 15 series is equipped with one of the latest 6th generation Skylake processors which are optimized for Windows 10: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/ad/windows-10/win7supporteddevices.html
