El Capitan and Microsoft Mouse (IntelliPoint) Not Working

Absolutely! Actually, it allows you to customize that STAR button + Zoom buttons + Num Lock + Delete, Insert, Home, End, and almost anything else (though I didnt change it). So.. even if we miss 5 buttons (that is, 4 as we can customize the STAR) we are actually getting more. For me, those Zoom buttons and Num Lock button was so important coz of the fact that I was not using those 5 fav buttons much.

Am just waiting to see if there is any problem before upgrading... and its fine to use as a shareware as well.. no such annoyance or ads or anything else to distract.

Thanks for mentioning USB Overdrive.  I actually bought it some years ago, but hadn't used it and had actually forgotten I owned it.

So, I fired it up, after updating it, and sure enough, I was able to program more of my MS Desktop 4000 -- Forward and Back keys, Home, Search, Mail, etc...BUT, as you note, USBO was NOT able to detect the 5 special HotKeys, but I was able to see the "Star" (Programmable Button Configuration) key that MS uses for you to set those 5 hotkeys. So, I'm much happier than I was before I saw you post, so many thanks.

I hope that MS does an El Capitan upgrade soon, but in the meantime, I have a great deal of functionality back, and I remember why I bought USB Overdrive in the first place, and like you, have been customizing other keyboard keys.

i tried this website, it is not free. There is a cost of $20. I can buy a new apple mouse for $12, I love intellipoint. Should I just bite the bullet and pay?

Please read my answer once again. I said it's a shareware:

"It's a shareware and is free forever. The only limitation is a popup notifcation to upgrade when you start your computer.

I havent upgraded yet but it's something that I will consider if MS didn't solve the issue."

But you can use the software without any limitation. If you want to disable that popup it costs $20. As I said, I might consider after using it for a while. As of now, I feel that popup is not that annoying as it happens only one time after starting up. It won;t popu again until we start the PC. But it appears again when we try to access its settings from System Preferences (again I assume it's totally ok).

I might ahve bought its license but I bought SteerMouse earlier but realized that USB O can replace SteerMouse as well.. It can customize the keyboard as well as mouse.

Anyway, just try this one. It worked better than IntelliType at least for me.

My setup:

Mac Mini 2012

Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000

MS dongle plugged into Belkin 7 port USB hub

Mac OS El Capitan 10.11

Just upgraded to El Capitan and had basic mouse functionality. Googled a bit and found this thread. 

Did a restart and into Recovery Mode. Couldn't get into Recovery at first so then I hooked up a stock Apple wired keyboard and was able to get in.

Launched Terminal and typed

csrutil disable

Hit Return

Typed:

reboot

Once the mac started up it didn't work right away so I unplugged the USB dongle and plugged it back in. And then everything started working!! I could change the Microsoft shortcuts, wheel scroll and Mouse speed. My mouse is still plugged into the USB hub and not my Mac. Which is perfect for my setup. Save your money folks this works. Thanks again to Matt B and others.
