After installing the El Capitan GM, the forward/back buttons (side buttons, 4 & 5) on my Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000 are only registering as left mouse buttons. The most recent driver, Microsoft Mouse 8.2 is installed and shows up in the System Preferences, but appears to not be functioning. MicrosoftMouseHelper is in the login items. Suggestions?

Am on macos sierra 10.12.1 running on 2011 iMac 27".
After os upgrade, my intellipoint mouse lost buttons 4 and 5 functionality.
The csrutil disable in safe boot method worked for me but after restart I had to unplug usb mouse and plug it back in the computer usb port and no the keyboard usb port.
Now buttons 4 and 5 are back as before.
I have Sierra v 10.12.1
Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical USB / PS2 Compatible 5-Button
First Download Newest Intellimouse Software
https://www.microsoft.com/accessories/en-sg/d/intellimouse-optical
Install Driver (Security Permissions Most Likely Will Not Let You Open Driver)
Go To System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Bottom Right Click Open
Install Drivers (Mouse Will Still Not Be Detected, That's Okay)
Reboot Will Happen After Install
When Apple Logo Shows Up > Hold Down Command + R
This Will Take You To Safe Boot > Open Terminal
In Terminal Type > csrutil disable
Restart
Now Go To System Preferences > Open Microsoft Mouse
Mouse Should Be Detected.
Once You've Confirmed Mouse Detected > Restart Into Safe Boot Again (Holding Command + R At Apple Logo)
Open Terminal Again > csrutil enable
Should Be Good To Go!
OK, I've downloaded SteerMouse and after a bit of searching on the internet found how to set up my mouse button commands.
SteerMouse works for me but they could put the keys for "Handled by Mac OS" on their support section!
It's insane.
I've bought this expensive laptop computer for 3D work and I can't use it because the mouse doesn't work!
I'm looking at Logitech but that won't solve my problem in the short term.
I understand why Microsoft aren't updating their software but Apple are seriously missing a major trick here.
I gave up! It was working and then stopped. Wasn't reliable. I bought a SteelSeries Sensei RAW mouse as they had drivers and looked like they were kept up to date and it's just as worthless. Not working in Sierra and they are having issues with their drivers. Apple to blame maybe? Not sure. Like you said, something so simple, can't get over the problems we are having getting a forward and backward buttons working on a mouse! Ridiculous!
