Battery drain while in sleep mode (Windows 10)

Hello

I have an Asus GL551. It original had Windows 8.1 on it but I upgraded to Windows 10 a few months ago. Ever since it has been running Windows 10 the battery will drain completely within 10-12 hours while in sleep mode. When it had Windows 8.1 this was not an issue. There would still be plenty of battery power even after a few days of not being used and in sleep mode.

I suspect that is is coming out of sleep mode periodically and draining the battery. Just the other day I had been watching a YouTube video. When It finished I closed the lid of the laptop putting it to sleep. About two hours later, with the lid closed the laptop started playing the Youtube video all by itself. I had not touched the computer and the lid was still closed.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Kevin

Please answer ALL of the following [admittedly tedious] diagnostic questions by number, preferably without quoting my post:

1a. When (approx. date) did you purchase the computer?

1b. Have you ever replaced the battery?

    1. Did the computer come with Win10 preinstalled, did you do a clean install of Win10, or did you upgrade a Win7 computer or a Win8.1 computer [<=PICK ONE!] to Win10?
    2. Who manufactured the computer (e.g., Dell; HP; Acer; Lenovo; ASUS)?
    3. Has a Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer since you bought it?
    4. Have you ever run the Norton Removal Tool and/or the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool?
    5. What Version & OS Build of Windows 10 is currently installed?

    • Press & hold the Windows Key and press the R key. In the RUN dialog, type WINVER and press the Enter key.

Hi Ari. I'm Greg, a volunteer installation specialist and 8 year WIndows MVP here to help you.

As previously stated here most Sleep problems are caused by the Display driver, so try updating yours or try another one previously installed at Device Manager>Display adapter>Driver>Update>Browse>Let me pick.

In addition there are steps here to specifically troubleshoot Sleep mode problems: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/fix-windows-10-sle...

You mentioned having a docking station. Does the problem happen both in and out of the dock?

Also did it previously work? Do you have a System Restore point from when it did?http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/how-t...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Thanks to each of you for trying to assist with my problem.

Unfortunately everything I have tried so far hasn't worked.

I have no anti-virus programs running so don't believe that's the issue.

I updated all of my drivers yesterday including BIOS but so far doesn't seem to have helped.

My laptop in on about 5 months old and a brand new, top-of-the-range Dell XPS.

    Latest example of my issue:

    • Laptop was plugged into my docking station at home
    • Put laptop to sleep and power button light turned off
    • In the morning returned to laptop to see power button light on
    • Woke computer up and battery had drained and I was required to plug power in

Ari, I would contact Dell under your 1 year included support warranty for possible repair or replacement. This may also be a known issue with that model. They are required to repair it or replace it within the first year.

Please let us know how it goes.

Hi Greg, I've tried that and even got my motherboard replaced, but doesn't seem to have resolved the issue. They say it's a windows related issue, the hardware is fine. Is there anything else I can try?
