Battery drain while in sleep mode (Windows 10)

Hello

I have an Asus GL551. It original had Windows 8.1 on it but I upgraded to Windows 10 a few months ago. Ever since it has been running Windows 10 the battery will drain completely within 10-12 hours while in sleep mode. When it had Windows 8.1 this was not an issue. There would still be plenty of battery power even after a few days of not being used and in sleep mode.

I suspect that is is coming out of sleep mode periodically and draining the battery. Just the other day I had been watching a YouTube video. When It finished I closed the lid of the laptop putting it to sleep. About two hours later, with the lid closed the laptop started playing the Youtube video all by itself. I had not touched the computer and the lid was still closed.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Kevin

My computer seems to be having issues with Sleep mode post recent Windows update.

I usually will put my computer to sleep while plugged into docking station as it connect to my desktop screen.

When I wake the computer now from sleep mode - even if it's been a number of hours - the screen comes on straight away and my battery has drained.

Most times when I wake my computer in the morning bow from overnight sleep it wakes saying battery is at critical low levels so has been draining through the night which usually wouldn't happen in proper sleep mode.

Also, whenever I used to wake my computer from sleep mode it would take 10-15 seconds for the computer to load up, but as I said now the screen comes on straight away which tells me the computer is not going to sleep properly.

I've also rechecked all my battery, power and sleep settings and nothing has changed there.

Please can someone assist me with this issue I now have?

Updating your Windows software protects you from malware and malicious attacks, often includes feature enhancements and security updates. The latest version of Windows 10 is Fall Creators Update Version 1709. If you update your operating system, you will also experience performance improvements even on your computer's hardware side including the power usage. Outdated applications and processes tend to drain more battery due to high CPU usage.

We suggest that you manually perform it by following the steps below:

    1. Make sure that you are connected to the Internet.
    2. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    3. Click Update & security.
    4. Click Check for updates.
    5. Wait and let your computer download the Windows Update.

To know more about the specifics of the Windows Update History, you can visit this link for more information.

Let us know if you have successfully updated your computer.

Thank you for responding Johann. I really appreciate it. It was quick too! I didn’t actually expect a response. What a nice surprise!

    1. Version: 1607

                    OS Build number:  14393.1770

    2. I cant recall making any recent changes to my computer

    3. The trouble shooting I’ve done is checked the apps that were using my battery in the battery settings. It said  “dropbox” used 38% of my battery in the last 24 hours (yesterday) every other app used less the 1% of battery. Then i changed some of my battery, power, sleep settings. I also checked my dropbox and deleted some files in there. I have no idea what it was doing to use up 38% of my battery.  I learned about hibernation. I didn’t have that option as part of my start menu. I set it up so that I have the option to hibernate. I used that today instead of sleep and came home to the same charge i left it this morning (86%). So I was happy about that. What is the difference between hibernating and sleeping?

    4. No to the question about full system scan windows defender

    5. All my background apps that are capable of running in the background were set to run in the background yes. My husband just helped me find that setting and now i turned some off. What does that mean exactly? Running in the background? Like my calculator app was set to run in the background. What can it possibly be doing in the background that’s using my battery?

    6. My computer is not overheating

Thank you for you help. If you can help me further that would be great!

    Hi Kanthini,

Battery drains drastically if there are too many background applications running on your computer even in Sleep mode. This means that this mode is customization and can allow programs running. To ensure that we can provide the appropriate resolution for your concern with Power options, we’d like to ask you a few questions:

    • Which version or build of Windows device are you using? To know, press Windows + R to open the Run window. Type winver and press Enter. A new window will open showing the version and build number of your Windows device.
    • What were the recent changes made on your computer before you experienced this issue?
    • What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?
    • Are you running a full system scan using Windows Defender?
    • Do you have any background applications running while in Sleep mode?
    • Is your computer overheating?

We’re looking forward to your response.
