I've carried out instructions 1 to 8, then I did a Windows backup (it took 12 hours). When it finished, I rebooted and I was offered the option to upgrade to Windows 10 immediately or to start downloading but upgrade later. When I do do the upgrade, my inclination would to choose the second option. Should I disable or uninstall Kaspersky beforehand? If so, should I activate Windows Firewall?

So at this point you haven't select either option yet.

• If you choose Option 1, chances are the (~3 GB) files needed to install Win10 wouldn't download immediately - and if they did, it'd take a considerable amount of time (depending on you connection) to complete.
• If you choose Option 2, there'd not be much difference - except that the literal install of Win10 wouldn't begin automatically. Either way, everything's going to be downloaded.

Should I disable or uninstall Kaspersky beforehand?

If Kaspersky Internet Security 2015 (v15.x) is installed, Kaspersky Support says it's best to upgrade to Kaspersky Internet Security 2016 (v16.x) before upgrading to Win10. If you upgrade to Win10 with Kaspersky 2015 installed, you should be prompted to upgrade to Kaspersky 2016 after the upgrade completes - but why risk it?

TIP => If & when you decide to upgrade and your computer's been restarted after the upgrade completes, don't touch the computer for ~30 minutes or so. [Walk away & have a cup of coffee.] Then reboot a second time to be sure all is well.

It didn't work.

The Kaspersky update preparatory to upgrading to Win10 produced a BSD but the reboot then seemed stable (and the Kaspersky 2016 version had been installed), so I went ahead. After the upgrade was finished, a Kaspersky alert appeared, advising that Microsoft Windows 10 had been detected and an update to Kaspersky was advised. As per your instructions, I did nothing for half an hour, then I restarted. When the Kaspersky alert reappeared, I chose to update. Windows gave its error screen and restarted at once. When the reboot was finished, I intended to try to uninstall Kaspersky, so I ignored its alert but, before I could do anything, a message appeared next to the southeast icons advising to view the Windows Firewall options, the Windows error screen came up, and Windows restarted. The same sequence of events happened again, and then I got the Recovery Options screen.

I first picked the top left option (pick a restore point) but there weren’t any. I then picked the bottom left option. I can’t remember what that was but it didn’t work. Finally I went for the restore to previous rebuild option, and left the machine running all night. When I got up, the screen was still "Restarting". I decided this had been going too long, so I switched the computer off and on. The new screen said "Restoring to previous build" and this lasted for about ten minutes, before Windows 7 came back.

This time around there was no difficulty opening the Backup and Restore option (but then Acronis had not been run at all after the earlier recovery). Also there was a recent Restore Point (9^th^ January) available, and there was no "ghost" drive in the System Protection page. However, I had the corrupt and missing tasks problem again - more than 80, which the task repairer program reduced to 26. I sorted those out manually as before.

The system now seems to be stable, and I am very reluctant to go through all this again.

The above is, I think, a reasonably accurate account of what happened, but there was one other thing which occurred. After the upgrade, there was a message next to the southeast icons about the Event Viewer. I only caught a glimpse of it, so I’m not sure what it said. I THINK it said something about access to the Event Viewer.

Have followed your trials and tribulations since I was also in the same boat. I must say that I profited somewhat from the good advice you have received along the way and I, too, would like to thank the people you corresponded with.

However, I am still left with the following problem: I cannot backup or restore my Win7 system. In following the advice given to you I rid myself of the corrupt image error but have a new one. It states that there is a problem with my last backup.

Needless to say, I have not been able to backup my system although it thinks that my last backup was on Jan 12, 2016 and there was a problem with it.

Also I noticed that the system takes a long time to boot up. Does anyone have a solution to this new problem? I have no clue as to where to look for a possible solution.
