How to access the Registry

My problem is that the Backup and Restore facility in the Control Panel (Windows 7) isn't working. I found a possible solution in a different forum (posted in 2009). The poster said to put the following into a Notepad file, then double click on it:

But I'm not clear on where exactly this is supposed to be placed. If it is supposed to be in the SOFTWARE.LOG1 or SOFTWARE.LOG2 hive, I can't access the folders even though I am the Administrator.

Can anyone help?

    I'm confused: Did you successfully upgrade to Win10 and then "downgrade" (rollback) to Win7 or did the upgrade to Win10 fail?

    It failed (I suspect because of an incompatibility with my Kaspersky antivirus and possibly with Acronis background programs).

    The biggest obstacle to regaining stability for Windows 7 seems to be a mismatch in names for the 3rd partition in my HD. The real one is Drive E: (HP_TOOLS) but it appears as "(C:) (Missing)" in System Properties. (Incidentally, drives C: and D: are both NTFS formatted whereas E: is FAT. The protections are given as on/off/on respectively.)

    I don't seem to be able to back up my HD correctly under ANY system (even Acronis) because of this mismatch in names. (Any retry at upgrading to Windows 10 would, I think, be insane until this problem is sorted.)

    Assuming Win7 64-bit with Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) installed...

    We'll need to "dig a little deeper" here. Please answer each of the following[admittedly tedious] diagnostic questions in a correspondingly-numbered list in your very next reply, preferably without quoting my post:

    1a. When (approx. date) did you purchase the computer?

    1b. When (approx. date) did you attempt to upgrade to Win10?

    1c. Was the upgrade offered via Windows Update or did you attempt to upgrade manually using the Media Creation Tool & ISO?

    1. What is the full name of your installed Kaspersky application (e.g., Kaspersky Internet Securit 2016) and when (approx. date) does your current subscription expire?
    2. Has a Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer since you bought it?
    3. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [PICK ONE] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

    5a. Is KB3104002, KB3109094, KB3099862, KB3108670, KB3108371, KB3108381, and/or KB3108669 listed in Installed Updates (not Update History)? [1]

    5b. How about KB3112343, KB3035583, KB2952664 and/or KB2990214?

    1. *Assuming Java is installed =>*Is Java Version 8 Update 65 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY! => http://java.com/en/download/uninstallapplet.jsp [2]
    2. Is Adobe Flash Player v20.0.0.267 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY! => http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ 

    8a. When (exact date) was Internet Explorer 11 installed according to Installed Updates?

    8b. What Update Version & KB number are displayed in the second line of text in IE11's Help | About [Alt+H+A] tab; e.g., Update Version: 11.0.99 (KB1231231) ?

    8c. Is Firefox, Chrome or any other alternate browser installed?

    1. Are you in the habit of using "Registry cleaners" (e.g., Registry Mechanic; System Mechanic; RegCure; RegClean Pro; Advanced SystemCare; Registry Booster; McAfee QuickClean; Glary Utilities; AVG PC TuneUp; Norton Registry Cleaner; PCTools Optimiser; SpeedUpMyPC; PC Doctor; TuneUp Utilities; WinMaximizer; WinSweeper; Comodo System Cleaner; Advanced System Optimizer; CCleaner's Registry Cleanercomponent)?

    Yes, it disappeared. But how do I get Drive E: to register? Or is there a problem because it's FAT formatted?

    Also, what happens if I switch on protection for the RECOVERY drive? What are the cons?
