How to access the Registry

My problem is that the Backup and Restore facility in the Control Panel (Windows 7) isn't working. I found a possible solution in a different forum (posted in 2009). The poster said to put the following into a Notepad file, then double click on it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

\WindowsBackup]

 "ValidConfig"=-

 [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

\WindowsBackup\ScheduleParams]

 [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

\WindowsBackup\Security]

 [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

\WindowsBackup\Status]

But I'm not clear on where exactly this is supposed to be placed. If it is supposed to be in the SOFTWARE.LOG1 or SOFTWARE.LOG2 hive, I can't access the folders even though I am the Administrator.

Can anyone help?

    Yes, it is. And I have a separate problem (also on the same computer) explained in "System Protection seems to be defective after Windows 10 downgrade".

    My HD has three drives:

    Local Disk (C:)

    RECOVERY (D:)

    HP_TOOLS (E:)

    But in System Protection the available drives are listed as:

    Available Drives                              Protection

    Local Disk (C:) (System)                   On

    RECOVERY (D:)                                Off

    (C:) (Missing)                                   On

    Both the drives and the protections look as if they're wrong. Are they?

    And if I switch on the protection for D:, what might I lose?

    On a separate point:

    Is it my imagination or was the Set Restore Point facility available in Backup and Restore? If so, it isn't now.

    Another issue is that in the Backup and Restore tab, it says "Windows Backup has not been set up". I can't remember now whether or not I had set it up before the Windows 10 downgrade, but when I click on Set up Backup, it offers two destinations: the DVD drive and the RECOVERY (D:) drive which has a mere 16.62 GB total size. This looks wrong.

    This certainly restored the right sizes of the words. However, I think there must still be something wrong because:

    a) Windows 7 doesn't appear in the list of OS options, and

    b) when the program opens there's an update now or later option, but the update doesn't work. However, cancelling that window leads into the program and all the functions seem to be operational.
