How to access the Registry

My problem is that the Backup and Restore facility in the Control Panel (Windows 7) isn't working. I found a possible solution in a different forum (posted in 2009). The poster said to put the following into a Notepad file, then double click on it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

\WindowsBackup]

 "ValidConfig"=-

 [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

\WindowsBackup\ScheduleParams]

 [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

\WindowsBackup\Security]

 [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

\WindowsBackup\Status]

But I'm not clear on where exactly this is supposed to be placed. If it is supposed to be in the SOFTWARE.LOG1 or SOFTWARE.LOG2 hive, I can't access the folders even though I am the Administrator.

Can anyone help?

I think this has worked out ok. I can't be sure because I did have a BSD at the end of it...

    Let's make sure!

    Is KB3124275, KB3124000, KB3124001, KB3121918, KB3109560, KB3110329, KB3108664, KB3121461, and/or KB3121212 (among others) listed in Installed Updates (not Update History) now?

I think this has worked out ok. I can't be sure because I did have a BSD at the end of it but my system FEELS pretty stable. I'll do some exploring and let you know. In the meantime, thank you very, very much.

    Q: Is KB3124275, KB3124000, KB3124001, KB3121918, KB3109560, KB3110329, KB3108664, KB3121461, and/or KB3121212 (among others) listed in Installed Updates (not Update History) now?

A: None of the updates has been installed. I selected them to install, but when I clicked on Ok, the Windows 10 upgrade window was offered. (This is what comes up when I click on Installed Updates, anyway.) In other words, I don’t seem to have a way of installing the updates you list.

You've gotta get rid of the Win10 upgrade (at least for now). Start here: http://blog.ultimateoutsider.com/2015/08/using-gwx-stopper-to-permanently-remove.html

    Good luck!

I made a mistake in my first version of my last reply. I wrote: "...(and the Kaspersky 2016 version has been installed), so I went ahead." After posting, I spotted the error and corrected this to "had been installed". I imagine you read the earlier, unclear version.

Regarding the firewall alert, you could be right and Kaspersky isn’t working properly. There was a BSD when I updated, remember. Also, even though my current setup seems stable, I am getting occasional warnings from Kaspersky telling me that my WiFi is not secure (whereas it actually is).

    Anyway, to answer your questions:

    1. The version now installed is 16.0.0.614(d). My current subscription has another three months to run.
    2. The Kaspersky firewall is enabled; the Windows one appears not to be.
    3. None of the updates has been installed. I selected them to install, but when I clicked on Ok, the Windows 10 upgrade window was offered. (This is what comes up when I click on Installed Updates, anyway.) In other words, I don’t seem to have a way of installing the updates you list.
    4. Yes.

I can't tell from your last reply if you'd successfully upgraded Kaspersky Internet Security (to the Win10-compatible version) before you attempted to upgrade to Win10 or after you attempted to upgrade to Win10.

If the 'firewall alert' in Notification Area ("southeast icons") concerned checking Windows Firewall settings, chances are the current install of the Kaspersky suite (whatever version) was/is not working properly.  [If working properly, Kaspersky's firewall should automatically disable the Windows Firewall by default in Win10 as well as Win7.]

In any event, you're back to Win7 and I have some follow-up questions:

    1. What version of Kaspersky Internet Security is installed now and when does your current subscription expire?
    2. Is the Kaspersky firewall enabled and is the Windows Firewall disabled now?
    3. Is KB3124275, KB3124000, KB3124001, KB3121918, KB3109560, KB3110329, KB3108664, KB3121461, and/or KB3121212 (among others) listed in Installed Updates (not Update History) now?
    4. Double-checking => Is Adobe Flash Player v20.0.0.267 or higher installed now? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY! => http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
