Update for Windows Live Essentials Mail 2012 (KB3093594) kills WLM 2012

I also use a desktop pc with a 27" monitor when I'm at home. I've been using WLM for many years, and it has served me well. I agree the problem with windows 10 mail app is that it is designed for hand held devices and when compared to WLM is very feature poor. The growth in pc's is over and hand held devices are the future, so I think MS is not as concerned with pc customers as they once were. The point of my first post is that somebody made a post stating that WLM will no longer function after some time in June. I don't believe that is true except that it will no longer function with Outlook.com, otherwise it should continue to work as it always has.

Is it actually true that WLM 2012 cannot be used with Hotmail and Outlook accounts for email syncing on outlook.com once Delta Sync is switched off sometime after late June 2016.

I ask because why can't WLM 2012 users access their Outlook and Hotmail accounts by switching to using the IMAP protocol and settings (which I am currently doing). I admit the Folders do not update as fast as the (near immediate) Delta Synced folders did) BUT there is often only 10 seconds so delay (not dissimilar to other IMAP non MS accounts used with WLM 2012).

If I am correct then it is VERY disappointing MS chose to not mention this obvious workaround in their WLM will no longer work with Outlook.com email.

I believe if IMAP can be  used, then the only losses will be Calendar and Contact List syncing (I am guessing a huge number of users do not use Calendar syncing anyway).  I NEVER sync my Contacts List after being hacked once and my stored online contacts were used by the hacker.

I have just seen a very disturbing a  new report only days ago that 4 major providers (have just been hacked for hundreds of millions user name and password and being distributed by a young Russian Hacker.  No Idea if true but am guessing it is as widely reported by reputable organizations.

Hacking is a major reason and why I like Desktop Apps like WLM 2012 or Thunderbird. 

IF outlook.com or others are hacked the hacker gets none of my contacts or archived emails at all (but current few days max) as all are stored locally and deleted online.

I accept this is of not of use for those who require accessing their new email, archived email and contacts lists from different locations and therefore need the data stored online. In my case I only need access from a specific location so WLM 2012 and IMAP if it will still work on outlook.com after late June 2016 is perfect option for me.

According to iFiredog's post,

"The only real casualty of the migration is calendar synchronization, which won't work at all on 16.4.3528, crashes the program on 16.4.3263 on Windows 10 and possibly Windows 8.1 too, and works unreliably on 16.4.3264."

I am currently on 16.4.3528, so if I understand correctly, the only change I should experience is calendar sync won't work anymore.

I read the hacking article too and immediately changed all my passwords.

If you don't keep any email on the server, then it sounds as if you ought to be using POP3 rather than IMAP. This can be configured to delete messages from the server.

While there has been a good deal of disinformation suggesting that IMAP and POP3 will not work with Outlook Mail accounts in Windows Live Mail after the end of June, I just don't believe it. This, for example, from the post which support agents keep referring us to:

Windows Live Mail will stop connecting to Outlook.com beginning late June 2016

You can continue to use Windows Live Mail to connect toother email services via IMAP or POP3.

That sounds pretty unequivocal, but in fact the first sentence is missing via DeltaSync and the second is missing as well as Outlook Mail.

Noel ... the Micorsoft statement is pretty darn clear:

"Effective late June 2016, Windows Live Mail 2012 will NO LONGER synchronize emails, contacts, and calendar events from email accounts ending in @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, or @msn.com. These email accounts are powered by Outlook.com.

Outlook.com is being upgraded to a new infrastructure that delivers innovative email and calendar experiences with enhanced performance, security, and reliability. The Windows Live 2012 email application DOES NOT support the modern synchronization technologies used by the new Outlook.com, so once your account is upgraded to the new Outlook.com, you will NO LONGER be able to send or receive Outlook.com email from Windows Live Mail 2012."

How much more clear does the giant "F" you to the millions of WLMD 2012 users need to be?

And no - neither IMAP or POP works for me ... despite repeated attempts. POP works for a few days then stops. IMAP works sporadically either timing after authorization but before downloading messages, or on the occasion it does connect and start download, timing out there as well.

After three manual attempts that all timed out after authorization but before downloading anything my MSN IMAP connected and started downloading messages ... appx 2 min later it stopped with this message:

"Your IMAP command could not be sent to the server, due to non-network errors. This could, for example, indicate a lack of memory on your system.

Configuration:

   Account: Scott Gates MSN IMAP

   Server: imap-mail.outlook.com

   User name: ******@msn.com

   Protocol: IMAP

   Port: 993

I have 5.7gb mem in use and 2.1gb memory free. 7.1gb of 13.6gb committed and 2.1gb cached. Same exact system that NEVER EVER had a problem with retrieving mail before Decembers WLMD 2012 debacle, and which has NO problem with 5 other non-MS POP and IMAP accounts.
