Update for Windows Live Essentials Mail 2012 (KB3093594) kills WLM 2012

Would you please confirm that I do not need to install KB3093594 and that my outlook.com account will continue to sync in WLM2012 after the changes that you are to make "in a few weeks"?

Windows 7 64 bit. After installing the patch, I lost all entries in calendar of live mail ... I could not sync it with my outlook account either ...

The calendar you see when you're not signed in is the default calendar. If you're used to being signed in, then the default calendar will probably be empty. Is this what you saw when you wrote I lost all entries?

When you sign in, the account calendar should load and synchronize with the one at calendar.live.com. If it doesn't, there will usually be an error message; otherwise the status message will read Your calendar has been updated. Bearing in mind the number of synchronizations going on these days, it may take several sync cycles before it's successful.

The simplest way to force a sync is to use the right-most button on the Home tab of the ribbon to Sign out of Windows Live Mail, wait a few moments for the default calendar to load fully, then use the same button again to Sign in.

I am glad I found the email suspicious and checked it out before installing, as I do not need it.

The Knowlage Base Article seems to suffer the common low quality of info found these days, and is not only thin on info, but also misleading.

It says there are no prerequisites, but now we find that there is 1 very important prerequisite, "Outlook Mail (Preview)" which is the only reason to use this update.

Personally I found the email suspicious due to the use of an uncommon URL and an obfuscated key, which sends me to the real location.

Virus Total cleared it and showed me where I would actually be sent.

Q: Why could Microsoft not just send people a normal link to the download ?

A: So we can be tracked even if we use a tracker-blocker.

Considering my MS ID was used to login, this seems pointless.

Being that obfuscated links is the common tactic of malware spreaders, I question the use of an obvious tracking method to hide a destination URL, while we are still struggling to teach regular users how to browse safely and spot scams and malware.

The use of obfuscated links in emails has become one of the worst and most common security threats, and we do not need "trustworthy" companies to be using non-trustworthy methods.

Getting users desensitised to not knowing where they are going to land, is quite frankly irresponsible.

Have been using this program for months now on windows 10 32 bit, and I get an email saying that MS are making changes to Outlook servers and to patch WLM 2012 and a download link.

I applied the patch and now after a few seconds of being open WLM 2012 crashes while updating the calendar.

Anyone know a fix for this? I have taken the patch off by repairing Windows essentials 2012 from the Programs and features dialog, but anyone know why this patch causes WLM to crash after a few seconds?

I have the solved the problem and I want you and Microsoft to read my solution because this is a MICROSOFT problem.  My windows live mail 2012 was working fine on my laptop until I put this "patch" on it that broke it.  Then it crashed.  I solved the problem by REMOVING windows email account from windows live mail.  Many security experts recommend using your ISP's email and that is what I do.  I merely have the Windows account because you have to have it to get in the store.  I do not use it to send and receive messages and it is ridden with junk and even though my microsoft email has a very secure password and has only ever been logged in front my home computer, it was reported as having been compromised while my other email addresses from other household members using the same machines had not been reported as having been compromised.  That means if it was compromised, Microsoft gave my password out because I never read email in that account unless it relates to a Microsoft/NSA compatible app.  You can trust microsoft to make all of their products NSA (national security agency) compatible and you can trust them to tell you that your information is encrypted while in the background they are making it a team sport to break their own encryption.  That is why their phone did not and will not ever sell, and why Apple dominates that market.  That being said, Just remove the Microsoft account.  It is useless, worthless, a security risk, ridden with spam, and increases the likelyhood that you will accidently get malware from their ridden with spam email client.  The email client from my isp had a great spam filter and they more aggressively go after spammers when you let them know you have a problem.

My confusion / bewilderment deepens !!

Your advice to NOT install the KB NOW but to install when account ceases to work in WLM "in a few weeks" appears to contradict your 12th Dec advice :-

" No Outlook Mail (Preview) accounts - do not install KB3093594."

That is my situation so,why the change of advice? Is the KB being updated behind the scenes?

What confidence have I got that if I install the KB in the magical "few weeks" I won't experience the disabling impact on WLM that others have reported in this forum thread?

I believe that Microsoft should withdraw the 11th Dec email and issue new clear, concise instructions to steer non geeks safely and simply through the transition. This is not a moment of glory for Microsoft.
