Update for Windows Live Essentials Mail 2012 (KB3093594) kills WLM 2012

I didn't download the original update and fortunately spotted it had been sneaked into windows updates so moved it to "hidden updates"

When looking at windows updates today, I checked update was still safely hidden but was surprised to see that it had vanished from the hidden list! Checked installed updates to be sure it hadn't sneaked through and, thankfully no sign of it.

I therefore went to the MS article :

Article was updated on 2/2/15 and, under "further information" at issue 3 it now says:-

"Issues 3:Some customers have reported other issues with the release on December 17, 2015. This update is no longer being offered while Microsoft investigates these issues farther. Server interactions will remain supported during this investigation."

Presumably that explains why it has vanished from my hidden updates?!

What a sorry mess MS have made of this.

To date my WLM2012 on Win 8.1 64 bit continues to work ok.

This post is somewhat misleading as the discussion relates to Windows Live Mail 2012, whether it is running on Windows 7, Windows 8(.1) or Windows 10.

"NOW he tells me."  Wish't I were as adept as you in protecting myself.  I shall proactively search Windows forums for Paul M999 posts in the future.  

I take some comfort that I dodged Windows 8 and paid a substantial premium to get Win 7 machines.  And, I'm glad I've resisted the enticements for Win 10.

How embarrassing it must be for MS to need multiple updates to fully resolve a problem MS created that affects only MS' own e-mail platforms (and their latest and greatest operating system).

I have W7 Home and have 1 Outlook and 3 Hotmail accounts on WLM2012. All are functioning normal. I realize that may change in an instant in the top secret labs of MS. What I did: 1) I did not download and install that Update from the email in December. MS hasn't done something as stupid as an email linked update since the days of the old MSN Network. 2) I didn't download the new improved update later in December, which caused more problems. Typical of the old updates in the days of W95/W98. 3) And I didn't download that same KB when it appeared in Windows Updates. I just love how MS tucked it in there with all the security updates, just like that W10 advertising update that left an idiot icon in the taskbar. Feels as tho MS is repeating all of AOL's insanity of the 90s, and might end up being as irrelevant as AOL is today.

Hi, this thread has been relatively quiet for a while.  I, too, am a non-techie like yourself.  I have windows 10 and after I removed the patch that Microsoft said to download, windows live mail 2012 has been working fine.  Whether that will change in the future, I don't know.  But right now its working so I'm leaving everything status quo...
