Important information about your email service

Many users of Windows Live Mail 2012 have received an email under this heading from the Outlook Team advising them of the changes that are taking place at Outlook.com as accounts are migrated to the same platform as that used by Office 365. Apart from advice to switch to using the built-in Mail apps on Windows 8.1 and 10, users are instructed to apply the patch KB3093594. A few points to note:

  1. The change means that migrated accounts can no longer be synchronized using the old DeltaSync protocol. To synchronize these accounts, users can set up the account again to use IMAP. This will enable mail messages and folders to synchronize, but not the calendar and contacts.
  2. The patch enables support for Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) to be used instead of DeltaSync in Windows Live Mail 2012 on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 (see System requirements on the download page).
  3. Mail synchronization errors can often be cleared by removing the account, closing down the program and waiting a few minutes, then re-launching it and adding the account back again.
  4. We don't know what is going to happen with Windows Live Mail 2009 on XP and 2011 on Vista. It is clear that users will no longer be able to sign in with a migrated account to synchronize contacts and calendar, and they won't be able to synchronize mail messages and folders using DeltaSync. Whether the programs will continue to work in other respects (e.g. as a POP3, IMAP and NNTP client) remains to be seen.
  5. Apart from this question of synchronizing mail, calendars and contacts with a Microsoft Email account, there is no change now or in the foreseeable future for Windows Live Mail 2012. Mail accounts configured to use POP3 or IMAP will continue to work as before, the default calendar and contacts lists will still be available and the other functions - RSS feeds and newsgroups - continue as before.

    iFiredog please clarify something for me.

    1. Are you saying that @outlook.com users that wish to stay with Windows Live Mail 2012, on Windows 10, MUST use IMAP and LOSE the ability to sync contacts, and Calendars?
    2. Are you saying that it enables EAS only on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 and NOT 10?

    If this is correct, then @outlook.com users, whom expect ALL their data to be synced are being forced away from Windows Live Mail and over to the New Mail App, or Outlook Office CLient or the website, or some other 3rd party?

    The only problem I have with that other than it was not at all clearly communicated to end users that they would lose sync ability by going to IMAP, (many folks don't know what IMAP is after all); is that THERE IS NO ABILITY TO CREATE GROUPS OF CONTACTS TO EMAIL USING THE NEW MAIL APP IN WINDOWS 10.

    If it looks like I am yelling, I am. Not at you, at Microsoft. I don't think too many folks object to having to move to a new mail client; what we object to, is losing the most basic functionality of being able to email to Groups of contacts. I don't think Microsoft understands how many peoples eyes glaze over when you tell them they need to bounce back and forth from the website to the Mail App in order to manage groups of contacts to email to.

    Please clarify for me what I have gotten wrong here, and thanks for contributing as an MVP.

    This thread is going to get a LOT longer.

    Apart from being told my locally stored data would be safe, I was referred to this thread for further info. It seems to confirm the idea that if you do NOT care about signing on to MS to use their email system and are happy with a standalone calendar and contacts list, you may still be OK with WLM for a little while at least. It would be nice to know whether that is days/weeks/months/years...

    Either way, it does seem to me that MS are really trying hard to push serious e-mail users to their paid subscription service (Office 365) or to a 3rd party system (possibly on the basis of if you aren't going to pay us something we don't want you). Bit shortsighted I would have thought but hey, I've only been using computers since the days of CP/M and PC/MS-DOS and am a bit old-fashioned, so what would I know in this world of social media, push selling and surgical attachment to a smart(?)phone.

    No. There's no need to do anything until the account in question is upgraded to Outlook Mail, which might be months away. I expect that the problem with the program crash when synchronizing the calendar using Windows Live Mail 16.4.3563.0918 on Windows 10 will eventually be solved. Until it is, users with upgraded accounts won't be able to sync calendar and contacts.

    No, they're not. There is a (hopefully) temporary problem with synchronizing the calendar for upgraded accounts on Windows 10. Let's hope it will be solved sooner rather than later.

    I agree. Outlook sent an email advising me I need to install a Microsoft patch, to make a Microsoft programme compatible with another Microsoft programme. MS want us to all go over to Windows 10... so what do they do??Yes you got it... they create an update that is not compatible with Windows 10!

    I checked their knowledge base today, and I see they have already amended this patch. BUT they still haven't made it compatible with Windows 10....

    Luckily for me, my Outlook.com email service hasn't yet been upgraded. So I don't have to install this patch yet.

    I hope that by then, there will be a patch available that is suitable for us Windows 10 users.. Talk about a mess!!
