Many users of Windows Live Mail 2012 have received an email under this heading from the Outlook Team advising them of the changes that are taking place at Outlook.com as accounts are migrated to the same platform as that used by Office 365. Apart from advice to switch to using the built-in Mail apps on Windows 8.1 and 10, users are instructed to apply the patch KB3093594. A few points to note:

  1. The change means that migrated accounts can no longer be synchronized using the old DeltaSync protocol. To synchronize these accounts, users can set up the account again to use IMAP. This will enable mail messages and folders to synchronize, but not the calendar and contacts.
  2. The patch enables support for Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) to be used instead of DeltaSync in Windows Live Mail 2012 on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 (see System requirements on the download page).
  3. Mail synchronization errors can often be cleared by removing the account, closing down the program and waiting a few minutes, then re-launching it and adding the account back again.
  4. We don't know what is going to happen with Windows Live Mail 2009 on XP and 2011 on Vista. It is clear that users will no longer be able to sign in with a migrated account to synchronize contacts and calendar, and they won't be able to synchronize mail messages and folders using DeltaSync. Whether the programs will continue to work in other respects (e.g. as a POP3, IMAP and NNTP client) remains to be seen.
  5. Apart from this question of synchronizing mail, calendars and contacts with a Microsoft Email account, there is no change now or in the foreseeable future for Windows Live Mail 2012. Mail accounts configured to use POP3 or IMAP will continue to work as before, the default calendar and contacts lists will still be available and the other functions - RSS feeds and newsgroups - continue as before.

    It's not a good idea to download Microsoft software from third-party sites, particularly when it's still available from the official download page.

    It was released in April 2014,

    The latest English-language release of Windows Essentials 2012 is 16.4.3528.0331, compiled on 31 March 2014 (that's what 0331 means) and released a few days later. That's the one available from download.microsoft.com, where you know it's clean and doesn't bring anything else with it.

    I think the update came out much later.

    The patch that updated Windows Live Mail 2012 to 16.4.3563.0918 was released in October 2015 and discontinued in December. It was re-released on 17 December and now updates Windows Live Mail 2012 to 16.4.3564.1216, which doesn't cause the program to crash when updating the calendar on Windows 10.

    So I'm asking others to find legacy downloads and install those instead.

    Hi,

    Not too sure if its related to this update, but the default calendar colour is pink, if I change the colour WLM will re download the same calendar again, so I have duplicate calendars. Also if I add an event to my calendar, it very seldom gets added to the online calendar, I also no longer get any notifications. The issues with notifications and events not being added seemed to start 01/01/2016. Currently this system is a mess. Also tried my laptop which has Windows 10, calendar does not show any events I have added, this is a real mess. My main computer runs Windows 7 (the last decent OS)

    I have finally gotten back to this problem, and finally (almost ) fixed it.  I now have WLM Calendar working and syncing on my computers, but still not working on my Android phone. 

    I backed up all emails, accounts and contacts.  Then I deleted all accounts, and uninstalled all apps. that come with Windows Essentials (Live) 2012.  I then ran a registry cleaner and made sure there were no traces of WLM except the backups  After restarting, and re-installing Windows Essential 2012, I re-setup the mail accounts, and imported the old emails, everything seems to be working.  The calendar synced with the on-line version, and is syncing between computers.
