Disabling Windows Compatability Telemetry

Does anybody know how to stop the Windows Compatability Telemetry (CompatTelRunner.exe) from starting? It causes extremely high disk usage which results in large performance issues.

    I saw the deleted content in my inbox. If one defines malware as:

    (1) Having no useful purpose

    (2) Installed without permission

    (3) Causes performance issues with the computer

    then it is malware. If malicious intent is required, then it is admittedly not. However, Microsoft's so-called software professionals need to foresee the consequences of what they send out, because this software did indeed cause trouble until I finally got rid of it.

    Ok, no malicious content - but the effect is very similar to having malware or a virus in your system.

    Im wondering how you were trying to help people in this thread with your comment? By being condescending and making people feel they are idiots? Well mission accomplished...

    The CompatTelRunner only started to hog my disc today and made the computer near unusable in close intervals. On Win 8.1 and have been for years, but never noticed this program hogging resources before this even though I use the computer daily and very frequently.

    Thanks for the advice in this thread on how to get rid of it.

    I am running Windows 10 Pro and have the same problem with Compatability Telemetry slowing my computer.  I do not have the registry folder {DD17FA14-CDA6-7191-9B61-37A28F7A10DA}.

    Windows 10 updates are mandatory and will install automatically whether you want them or not. 

    The registry key I mentioned only applies to Windows 8.1

    If you feel that a telemetry update is slowing your system down, I'd advise you to open a new thread in the Windows 10 forum.

    Change the dropdown menus to look like you see them in the following screenshot otherwise your question will appear in the 8.1 forum again.
