Does anybody know how to stop the Windows Compatability Telemetry (CompatTelRunner.exe) from starting? It causes extremely high disk usage which results in large performance issues.

While I'm intrigued, that program looks mighty old. Does it even work properly on Windows 10?

It works fine with me! And the little red icon in the task bar mentioning this PITA 'compattelrunner.exe is blocked' makes me smile every time! :)

Yeah it works in Windows 10 until MS does something to neuter this too. Although a caveat, notifications sometimes wonk out the taskbar and freeze it (Filezilla and others do it too). I think that's a Windows 10 issue though, not the apps.

Side note: So, this community somehow locked me out of my own accounts username? I logged in via Dhaupin, and it said i had to merge accounts. Now, my username is unavailable even though its attached to my email, forcing me to change it. Also, whats up with the thread view. So hard to nav.

One way to block this process is to use a tiny utility called "Process Blocker". https://www.processblocker.com. After installation, run it.

    Name of application to block:

    Compattelrunner.exe

In case it is ever renamed, choose:

"Block other applications with identical CRC"

Now the process is blocked. As a bonus, there is a notification shown every time it tries to run. PWND.
