Disabling Windows Compatability Telemetry

Does anybody know how to stop the Windows Compatability Telemetry (CompatTelRunner.exe) from starting? It causes extremely high disk usage which results in large performance issues.

    I've seen this wrong answer lots of places.   Typing gpedit.msc gives the error "Windows cannot find 'gpedit.msc'" and so fails

    It works fine for me, what version of windows are you using? Maybe you have to install it if you're using windows 10 home:

    I did this, and it appeared to work, then the application started running again. I checked the settings and it was still disabled. Microsoft appears to be ignoring its own system settings and just running the thing whether I will or no.

    This suggestion didn't help me at all as I keep on getting the message The update KB 2976978 is not installed on this computer everytime I try uninstalling it manually from the command line using WUSA. Is it possible that CompatTelRunner.exe is part of another update?

    I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

    The CompatTelRunner only started to hog my disc today and made the computer near unusable in close intervals. On Win 8.1 and have been for years, but never noticed this program hogging resources before this even though I use the computer daily and very frequently.

    Thanks for the advice in this thread on how to get rid of it.
