Hi,

Hello,

We have re-released KB3097877 for Windows 7 to address the difficulties at the logon screen that some customers experienced.

To resolve the issue:

  1. If you’re able to sign in, please scan for updates and install the fixed update.
  2. If you’re not able to sign in, try one of the following methods to uninstall KB3097877:
  • Use System Restore:  Restart the computer and repeatedly tap the F8 key before the Windows logo appears to access the System Recovery Options.  Select Repair your Computer.  Select the language, and then log on to the computer.  (If you don’t know the local password, you must start by using a Windows 7 DVD or USB bootable media and then access System Recovery Options.)  Select System Restore.  Restore the computer to the last restore point, and restart the computer.
  • Try uninstalling from Safe Mode:  Boot to Safe Mode.  If you’re able to log in in Safe Mode, click the Startbutton  and select Control Paneland then Programs.  Under Programs and Features, click View installed updates.  Find KB3097877 on the list, click the update and then click Uninstall.

Once you’ve uninstalled the update using either of these methods, restart the computer, and then check for updates and install the fixed update.  If neither of the above options work, there are two additional options for advanced users listed in the knowledge base article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3097877.

We recommend customers apply the re-released update to help stay protected.

What we need is an ISO  file or whatever they call it so that I can dowmload the file to a disc and boot directly to the disc and have the program on the disc delete the KB3097877 update. They've done it for other updates and they should do it for this one. I'm going to wait a couple more days before I reimage to see if they do. Meanwhile, My pc is blinking away to see if it fixes iteslf like DaleMahalko suggests.

Hi Dale. How do I get to the application event log? When computer boots up I can only get to the user logon screen. Do you suggest just leaving computer on this page and waiting for updates to load? What indication will I get if downloads successful?

Oh, I am just mentioning that AFTER it starts working you will find the Application log blanked out.

Just simply turn on the computer and leave it on. If the blinking annoys you, turn off the monitor.

After about an hour or two it may download the update, silently install it, and reboot the computer by itself. I saw this happen this morning for one that was broken.

This assumes it is plugged into a wired connection or that you have wifi set up with an "All Users profile" that works at the logon screen.

Wireless networking probably doesn't work at the logon screen if you have "Per user profile" instead. If you don't know which wireless profile it has and nothing happens after an hour or two, might try plugging it directly into a DSL router with a network cable.

Though since I am communicating this to the planet, all I can say is "Your Mileage May Vary"...

    ========

    EDIT:

To repeat, the computer needs to have previously been set for Automatic Updates, and automatic download and install. Also it needs to be past the time it automatically checks for updates (almost certainly is by now).

This will not work if the computer goes to sleep shortly after turning on. If it goes to standby at the blinking screen, you may need to wake it again, and possibly several times, to allow the update to finish downloading and install in the background.

Normally it waits a while to reboot if you are logged on but since you are not, it should just reboot immediately after the install.

OK, my wifey just found a solution, press f12 after a restart to get into the bios menu, before you go into bios there is an option "trouble solution navigation", then "system repair option",  then choose Windows 7, "next"... user Name and Password, "next", "repair tool", then choose "trouble solution navigation",  choose 2nd tab "recovery",  choose the middle 1,  "C drive" (if that is where you have Windows installed),  this formats the C drive and automatically installs Windows new,  I think this only works when you have a backup for Windows on an alternative partition on your HD, other than C,  it worked for my wifey, I hope it works for you....
