Hi,
For a few days now I'm getting an alert in my system tray that Windows cannot automatically search for updates. Clicking on the icon leads me to a message saying that the Windows Update Agent needs an update and a button to do this update. Clicking on the button closes the window, which then opens again after a few seconds with an error message that Windows cannot search for new updates. Error message code = 800F081F.
When I looked at my update history, I see that Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320 has failed daily for over a month now. I've already tried several suggestions (some posted on the dutch microsoft community) e.g. clearing the update cache, system update readiness tool, a 'clean' start of Windows, MS Fix It, but to no avail. Checkdisk and System File Checker scans found nothing wrong.
I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium with SP1, 64 bit. Not sure what other information I should provide that is relevant?
Hope someone can help me with this issue. Thanks in advance!
Kind regards,
Paul

Hi Gerry,
I have the product key, yes. It's on a sticker on the bottom of my laptop. Other than a Windows disk I don't think I need anything else, do I?
And I've asked about the SP1 update, but my friend wasn't sure about that. It's not her disk, but she knows someone who has one...so I guess I'll find out when I get it (after the Christmas holidays). In the meantime I can ask around to see if someone else has a disk for me to borrow.
And again: thanks a lot for trying to help me out these past few weeks. I really appreciate it!
Regards,
Paul

Does your friend's disk contain the SP1 update? If it does not contain the SP1 Update it will not work.
You do know your 25 character product key? Please do not post details of the product key here.
Hi Gerry,
thanks. I have found a friend who can get me an original Windows 7 Home Premium disk, so I may be able to do the In-Place Upgrade after all. If that doesn't work, I'll do the restore to factory settings as you described in your last post.
Thanks for all the help!
Regards,
Paul

I had hoped you might be able to download a copy of Windows 7 complete with SP1 but the web site where legitimate copies of Windows 7 can be obtained, does not carry Dutch versions of Home Premium. I now think your best move would be to back up data files and use the copy of Windows 7 in the recovery partition to restore to factory settings.
Your operating system is damaged. To eliminate the problems on your computer you need to restore to factory settings and rebuild your computer system.
A System Recovery partition contains a copy of the operating system as it was when the computer was purchased new. Using the copy of Windows 7 you can restore the computer to factory settings. Of course you should back up your data files to external media before restoring as the process reformats the drive thereby erasing all existing files before writing new files.

When you have restored to factory settings you should set up an internet connection, install anti-virus software, update all drivers from the Asus web site and install all Windows Updates. Run Disk CleanUp and defragment at intervals.

You should then be in a position to reinstall programmes. With that in mind make a list of programmes to be installed and check that you have the means to do it. Check that you have the necessary information to recreate your internet connection on the new system. Make a list of what you need to do and the order in which you intend to do each task. This will help you considerably when you carry out the operation. If you have a second computer available when you rebuild your computer system, this can help if you hit a problem and need to check online.
