BIOS Disclaimer

Updating BIOS should only be done if necessary (to solve a compatibility problem, for example). It can be a complicated process, and if an error occurs, your computer could be rendered inoperable. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly.

Thank you for your comments. I have uninstalled AVG Secure Search as per your recommendation.

With regard to the bios, I know this can be a risky process (and I take note of the disclaimer). Can you point me in the direction of how to update my bios in a safe manner as I really don't have a clue when it comes to that.  There is some direction on the internet but I wouldn't call it 'idiot proof', which is the kind of level I need...

It's too short a time period to get a reasonable picture from the Event Viewer log files. Please restart the computer, wait 30 minutes and post fresh logs. By the way the Event Viewer stopped recording events on 7 May 2011.

To identify what loads when you boot use Autoruns (freeware from Microsoft).

With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from starting, or you can right click an item and then delete it. If you uncheck you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer approach than editing the Registry and better than using msconfig.

Run Autoruns and select the Everything tab. Click File, Save and, using the scroll to the right, change the “Save as type” option from Autoruns Data (*.arn) to Text (*txt). The file name changes to AutoRuns.txt. Click the Save button and upload the file to your OneDrive as a shared file and post as a link here.

A useful feature of the programme is that you can right click an item and select Search Online to get information about the item selected.

I've been doing some reading on how to update the BIOS. I'm happy to give it a go, albeit a little nervous as I don't want to destroy my machine. When I put the file on a USB stick, does the stick have to be blank or can it have other files on it? Also, if it doesn't have to be blank, can I boot from an external hard drive?
