Update KB3000850 fails to install

Hi there,

I have a problem installing update KB3000850. It downloads and appears to install OK until the computer restarts to complete the installation. It gets to about 8% of configuring windows updates and then I get the following message:

failure configuring windows

undoing changes

The computer restarts and is usable. I don't know a great deal about windows error reporting but I checked the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS log and found the following message:

CBS Failed installing driver updates [HRESULT - 0x80070003 - ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND]

I checked the Event Viewer and found the following message in the Windows Logs\System section:

Event ID: 7023

Source: Service Control Manager

The Windows Modules Installer service terminated with the following error:

The system cannot find the path specified.

I have no idea which path it cannot find. I have tried running the SFC and DISM commands and have tried the Windows Update Automated Troubleshooter but none of these seem to fix it. I understand there is a problem with the Avast anti-virus software but I am running Norton 360. I am using Classic Shell and am not sure if that is causing the problem but don't want to uninstall it if the error is being caused by something else.

Any help or advice would be most gratefully received.

Thanks so much! I would have never guessed having a Kodak printer installed would've caused this issue, but it finally updated once these folders were created! :)

This shows up in my CRITICAL UPDATES section, not Optional. In addition I get yellow warning text when I login telling me to go install this CRITICAL UPDATE?

here was my problem and how I fixed it

In my case, kb3000850 and 8 other updates were continually being installed and reverted.

second point, stating kb3000850 is optional was not the case for me, it was listed as critical.

For those reasons I did not hide the update.

I read through many other posts related to kb3000850 and found that in some cases having Avast av possibly contributed to the failure(s).

I disabled the three Avast shields, activated Windows Defender. (I did not remove Avast).

I restarted the computer, the updates reinstalled and reverted again. I shutdown the computer again and on this restart all 9 updates installed.

I will leave Avast disabled until several more windows updates apply correctly and then decide whether I'm safe enough with Defender.

Good luck to others who persist in getting beyond this nightmare

I have the same problem but I find that this update is recorded as loaded successfully but yet it still keeps on trying to load the same update. When this happens the startup freezes with a "restarting" message on the screen.

A pain yet again from Microsoft!

My thanks as well for discovering this solution. I too have a Kodak printer so it seems the common feature causing the problem. Congratulations for finding such a seemingly tiny change that makes all the difference.

I'm also pleased with the results of the update, I find several features which were annoying me are resolved despite the fact it was quoted as an optional update. Right from booting up the computer now manages to remember that I have a French-layout keyboard instead of having to re-select this every time.
