How to fix 100% disk usage in Windows 10

This is caused by a common combination of Skype as well Google Chrome. Similar issue with other programs could also cause 100% disk usage. To fix this do the following:

Google Chrome:

In Google Chrome, go to Settings > Show Advanced Settings ... > Privacy > Prefetch resources to load pages more quickly

and untick it. See Figure-1 below:

Skype:

Make sure you have exited Skype and it is not running in the taskbar (if it is running in the taskbar then quit it).

Open Windows Explorer and open the following folder:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone"

Now right click "Skype.exe" file and then click "Properties" and open the "Security" tab.

Click the "Edit" button and then highlight "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" and place a tick in the "Write" box.

Click "Apply" and then "OK" and then "OK" again. See Figures-2 to Figure-6 below:

This is it, now run Skype and check the Disk Usage in Task Manager and it will no longer show you 100% disk usage anymore:-

I hope this helps people. I spent a long time in finding a solution to this problem.

    Wow! I sure wasn't expecting a reply like yours. That was a great reply my friend. I'm running a 6 year old Toshiba Satellite. It's running great. I really enjoyed your reply. I have no use for McAfee. IMHO it's a resource hog and almost impossible to remove. I'm running the 'creator' and using Windows Defender and Malwarebytes Pro in real time. I also have a combination NETGEAR modem. Not much scares me. I create regular back up images with Macrium Reflect. That makes me fearless. I'm undecided about my next brand. I'm sure it will be a laptop. I help seniors in my retirement village with their PCs and printers. A lot of of HPs. They make good products.

    I registered on this forum in 2011. Didn't stay long. Just recently returned after MS offered the free upgrade. Hoping I might help PC users a little. Once again I really enjoyed your reply. The forum needs more members like yourself.

    Hi there , I am sorry but I have to call you out ! I have an Acer Aspire 2009 and after reading your suggestion went on and set the paging fike size to ZERO . Then I restarted the Laptop well this is very frustrating because nothin is changed and the damned thing stays at 100% usage and my computer has gone super slow . So mate thanks but no thanks and no Kudos either.

    Hi I'm not going to read this whole thread. Here's my suggestion.

    Have you performed a hard drive test. I prefer seagate!

    Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. I've spent weeks doing so many different things to my system. They would get the disk usage back down to where it was supposed to be but it was like putting a bandaid on the problem. It would only last for as long as I had my PC on. After reboot, it would go back to the way it was. Thank you. I hope that this solution will stick unlike the others.
