How to fix 100% disk usage in Windows 10

This is caused by a common combination of Skype as well Google Chrome. Similar issue with other programs could also cause 100% disk usage. To fix this do the following:

Google Chrome:

In Google Chrome, go to Settings > Show Advanced Settings ... > Privacy > Prefetch resources to load pages more quickly

and untick it. See Figure-1 below:

Skype:

Make sure you have exited Skype and it is not running in the taskbar (if it is running in the taskbar then quit it).

Open Windows Explorer and open the following folder:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone"

Now right click "Skype.exe" file and then click "Properties" and open the "Security" tab.

Click the "Edit" button and then highlight "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" and place a tick in the "Write" box.

Click "Apply" and then "OK" and then "OK" again. See Figures-2 to Figure-6 below:

This is it, now run Skype and check the Disk Usage in Task Manager and it will no longer show you 100% disk usage anymore:-

I hope this helps people. I spent a long time in finding a solution to this problem.

    As to Skype a better solution is to remove entirely.  It has number of vulnerabilities and Microsoft has done very little to improve upon it.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the solution.

    But in my case neither the Chrome nor the Skype is the causing this issue.

    Its the 'System' process which is causing the issue.

    When ever I start my system. I have to wait for atleast 15-20 mins to thing to come to normal.

    Any advise?

    Doomsday, have you also looked at the Windows update settings?  Specifically where it gets updates from and whether it shares them with the local network and the Internet.  If it's sharing turn it off.  Also defrag the hidden partition - this cured problems for me.

    Do you have at least 4 gig ram?

    See my reply above.  Play around with your RAM modules.  The problem is Window's memory management.   It under-utilizes the RAM and keeps swapping to hard drive.  Swap modules around in the slots and remove unequally sized modules for a start.  Just play around.  Finding the right RAM combo has instant results.

    here i've another solution 

    this is a problem i've had faced it since i've installed windows 8.1 on my personal computer 

    so i've found the solution for it and it's :

    1-First click windows + R to open run ,

    2-on the rectangle type services.msc 

    3-then press ok

    4-then the square will open 

    5-look for superfetch and then right click on it

    6-click propirties 

    7-then choose disabled 

    8-and click on stop 

    9-then OK

    and repeat the steps from 5 but now search for Windows Search
