How to fix 100% disk usage in Windows 10

This is caused by a common combination of Skype as well Google Chrome. Similar issue with other programs could also cause 100% disk usage. To fix this do the following:

Google Chrome:

In Google Chrome, go to Settings > Show Advanced Settings ... > Privacy > Prefetch resources to load pages more quickly

and untick it. See Figure-1 below:

Skype:

Make sure you have exited Skype and it is not running in the taskbar (if it is running in the taskbar then quit it).

Open Windows Explorer and open the following folder:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone"

Now right click "Skype.exe" file and then click "Properties" and open the "Security" tab.

Click the "Edit" button and then highlight "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" and place a tick in the "Write" box.

Click "Apply" and then "OK" and then "OK" again. See Figures-2 to Figure-6 below:

This is it, now run Skype and check the Disk Usage in Task Manager and it will no longer show you 100% disk usage anymore:-

I hope this helps people. I spent a long time in finding a solution to this problem.

    I think that Microsoft has written Windows 10, especially 64 bit, so that it is focused on SSD.   My Windows 10 was upgraded by the Microsoft Store.  They kept it for 3 weeks thinking that it may mean my hard drive is failing.  The problem is that people with 5400 rpm hard drives may have them wearing out quicker due to the way they made this O/S. 

    Microsoft is like the bean counters were for the transmission problem in the Ford Taurus.

    LOL!  Mo, you should try Windows 10, 64 bit on an AMD Duo Core X64.  My old laptop just about smoked before I went back to Vista...

    I have downgraded back to windows 7. But my machine has taken a beating with 2 months of struggle.

    it is not the same anymore.. (Dell 1555).

    Made a mistake for the upgrade.

    Windows still prompts - windows is ready and has the tech specs for upgrade (for my lenovo u160). The

    performance failed and i struggle now after the downgrade.

    If OEM does not certify and you upgrade - you could pay the price...

    Digital, your Google fix seems to have done the trick for me.  The hard drive is no longer at 100%.  It was running at 100% for around 2-4 minutes at the start before fixing that problem.  Now, if it is still running at 100% I cannot get to the Task Menu fast enough after startup to see that. 

    My laptop is a 1 year old laptop AMD 10, hard drive is a 5200 RPM.
