How to fix 100% disk usage in Windows 10

This is caused by a common combination of Skype as well Google Chrome. Similar issue with other programs could also cause 100% disk usage. To fix this do the following:

Google Chrome:

In Google Chrome, go to Settings > Show Advanced Settings ... > Privacy > Prefetch resources to load pages more quickly

and untick it. See Figure-1 below:

Figure-1

Skype:

Make sure you have exited Skype and it is not running in the taskbar (if it is running in the taskbar then quit it).

Open Windows Explorer and open the following folder:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone"

Now right click "Skype.exe" file and then click "Properties" and open the "Security" tab.

Click the "Edit" button and then highlight "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" and place a tick in the "Write" box.

Click "Apply" and then "OK" and then "OK" again. See Figures-2 to Figure-6 below:

This is it, now run Skype and check the Disk Usage in Task Manager and it will no longer show you 100% disk usage anymore:-

I hope this helps people. I spent a long time in finding a solution to this problem.

    Hi,

It seemed to have worked initially, but again the disk activity is 100%.

The start up time also is way slow. Win 8.1 was very fast.

    Is there any other way?

I am using a Dell i7347-10051sLV laptop with 8GB RAM.

    Thanks in advance!

Some google chrome extensions are also responsible for 100% disk usage error. Uninstalling extensions which have bad reputation will solve the issue if the above mentioned solution dont work for you.

Well like everyone else my Disk usage in Windows 10 was 100% all of them time on only one of my Windows 10 computers. This is how I fixed it:

    1. Went into "Startup" tab in "Task Manager." There I disabled a few things that don't need to be running automatically when I start the computer up.
    2. Went into the "Add-Ons" and "Extensions" of each of my browsers and disabled non-essentials.  I run four different browsers. Firefox, Chrome, IE, and Edge. It seems that after the last mighty Windows update from Microsoft they took the liberty to sort of enable extensions I never heard of and which only bear their name.
    3. I went into "Default Apps" and designated only the ones I wanted. Again after the Windows update they seem to have set many of their new or preferred programs/apps as a default app. Like "Groove" for Music so I set it back to Windows Media Player which I am more familiar with and has more control options. You want to set all your defaults here so that you don't have many similar programs or apps fighting each other for dominance. This remedy gave me some reduction of disk usage.

    4)  I went to "All Settings", then to "Privacy", then to "Background Apps" which reads "Let Apps run in the background" at the top of the window. There I turned off many apps I never use and never plan on using. Again I already had these turned off after I first downloaded Windows 10, but my last mighty Windows 10 Pro 1511 update on 11-19-15 which they released on 11-18-15 was a really big update. This update caused the 100% disk usage, and was probably also when these Microsoft background apps were automatically promoted to default status again. This remedy here in "Background Apps" is where I got the most reduction of disk usage, and dropped it down to zero or near zero most of the time.

At least they did not activate Cortana behind my back. I can at least thank Microsoft for that.

It doesn't work in my case as I don't use Chrome and Skype.

It is easy to fix the hard drive usage at 100% in Windows 10: install an appropriate chipset / SATA driver.

I had an AMD A10 system with 16GB of ram, discrete graphics, SSD for boots and HDD for data.  The harddisk usage is often at 100% and slowing down my system.

I downloaded the AMD chipset driver, and installed it.  However it does not install the proper SATA controller driver.  So it is still at 100%.

Then I fix it manually in Device Manager, double click your standard SATA controller and press update driver.  Then when installing manually, navigate to the driver on the temporary directory created by AMD chipset installer.  Windows will update the driver and never again using my SSD at 100%.

The applies to Intel system as well.  If you cannot find Windows 10 driver for Intel chipset, installing Windows 7 driver will do just fine for my Intel 945 and Intel H55M chipset.

I have a (just of  the box) Dell Inspiron 15 5559. I have the same problem. I have tried many of these solutions but it still takes about 8 minutes before the 100% disk goes away. This is horrible. As much as I hate Apple ( and I really hate Apple), maybe it's time to throw in the towel and go with one of these overpriced machines that has a working operating system.
