Fixing 100% disk usage in Windows 10 with Chrome and Skype running
How to fix 100% disk usage in Windows 10
This is caused by a common combination of Skype as well Google Chrome. Similar issue with other programs could also cause 100% disk usage. To fix this do the following:
Google Chrome:
In Google Chrome, go to Settings > Show Advanced Settings ... > Privacy > Prefetch resources to load pages more quickly
and untick it. See Figure-1 below:
Figure-1
Skype:
Make sure you have exited Skype and it is not running in the taskbar (if it is running in the taskbar then quit it).
Open Windows Explorer and open the following folder:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone"
Now right click "Skype.exe" file and then click "Properties" and open the "Security" tab.
Click the "Edit" button and then highlight "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" and place a tick in the "Write" box.
Click "Apply" and then "OK" and then "OK" again. See Figures-2 to Figure-6 below:
This is it, now run Skype and check the Disk Usage in Task Manager and it will no longer show you 100% disk usage anymore:-
I hope this helps people. I spent a long time in finding a solution to this problem.

2016-10-28T21:21:51+00:00 I originally had this issue with Defender and having installed AVG. After cleaning that up with a reset, I had a whole other set of issues with the latest 1607 build of Windows updating and installing. Without a way to delay installing it anymore, it finally resolved itself of no effort of my own and installed properly finally. I know a whole lot of people had problems with this update package.
Now today after an apparent double update downloaded yesterday and automatically installed overnight, I am having the 100% disk usage problem again. It happens whenever I do ANYTHING in Windows and none of these solutions have brought any relief. I can't even uninstall the updates because the disk usage issue prevents it from having resources to complete the process. For some reason I am able to function in Chrome moderately well to be able to post this. Currently, in Task Manager the culprits are System, Windows Modules Installer Worker(as I am attempting update uninstall), Antimalware Service Executable, and occasionally Chrome. I may have to bite the bullet and try a complete fresh install like I did with the 1607 update fiasco.

2016-10-21T11:07:44+00:00 Hi Shane,
While we all have the 100% disk usage problem, our underlying symptoms differ considerably and likely the reason so many apparent fixes exist.
It would be helpful if you and others posting, would state EXACTLY the symptoms you're having. Try to state this in a short & simplistic form. The reason I say this is that there's likely someone else with those exact symptoms who has found the "fix" that works.....also likely the one you haven't yet tried.
In my case, my computer has been running perfectly for 1 1/2 months. (Defender Problem). I can re-introduce the problem at any time by reversing my fix....so I know this is actually just a workaround, but my computer is 100% happy.
