How to fix 100% disk usage in Windows 10

This is caused by a common combination of Skype as well Google Chrome. Similar issue with other programs could also cause 100% disk usage. To fix this do the following:

Google Chrome:

In Google Chrome, go to Settings > Show Advanced Settings ... > Privacy > Prefetch resources to load pages more quickly

and untick it. See Figure-1 below:

Skype:

Make sure you have exited Skype and it is not running in the taskbar (if it is running in the taskbar then quit it).

Open Windows Explorer and open the following folder:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone"

Now right click "Skype.exe" file and then click "Properties" and open the "Security" tab.

Click the "Edit" button and then highlight "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" and place a tick in the "Write" box.

Click "Apply" and then "OK" and then "OK" again. See Figures-2 to Figure-6 below:

This is it, now run Skype and check the Disk Usage in Task Manager and it will no longer show you 100% disk usage anymore:-

I hope this helps people. I spent a long time in finding a solution to this problem.

This fix is bull, I have neither Skype nor Chrome and my disk is still at 100%.

Hello,

I have found solution for 100% disk usage with all Toshiba Satellite Pro R-50-B laptops in our company. The problem occurs with all Windows Updates after Anniversary Update and only uninstalling update was temporary fix till next update.

Solution:

Enter Bios -> Power Managment -> Sata Interface setting -> Change to Battery Life.

All other solutions like disabling Windows services didn't work. Hope that will help!

Flowbench,

On my laptop Skype is now coming up also. Looking at the removing Apps program it is "Skype Preview," and Microsoft added it back to my laptop on 11/4/2016 with the Microsoft 10 Windows update. Off it goes right now...

My experience of PC usage & solutions to problems is pretty much as James Hargrove states...

Dell 17R 5737, W10, Google Chrome.

Regularly suffering from 99/100% disc usage.

On startup today one of the svchosts was pretty high - not sure which one - the tab was jumping about so much I gave up trying to pin it down. I have little patience for malfunctioning machines. Life is too short.

Also One Drive is shown as high demand on startup. I guess there'd be no harm in disabling it in startup & only enabling it as & when required?

Skype showed today in task manager as one of the main culprits in my 100% disc usage & high cpu figures etc.

In tm apps tab I see Messaging & Skype together - at over 47 minutes of usage in the last month.

However I uninstalled Skype ages ago, or at least thought I had...

I don't ms message & I have never used Skype on this laptop or in fact anywhere ever!

hello

first, i dont install google chrome and my skype is already uninstall, but the disk usage still 100%

is there any chance my pc is infected with malware or something else?
