How to fix 100% disk usage in Windows 10

This is caused by a common combination of Skype as well Google Chrome. Similar issue with other programs could also cause 100% disk usage. To fix this do the following:

Google Chrome:

In Google Chrome, go to Settings > Show Advanced Settings ... > Privacy > Prefetch resources to load pages more quickly

and untick it. See Figure-1 below:

Figure-1

Skype:

Make sure you have exited Skype and it is not running in the taskbar (if it is running in the taskbar then quit it).

Open Windows Explorer and open the following folder:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone"

Now right click "Skype.exe" file and then click "Properties" and open the "Security" tab.

Click the "Edit" button and then highlight "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" and place a tick in the "Write" box.

Click "Apply" and then "OK" and then "OK" again. See Figures-2 to Figure-6 below:

This is it, now run Skype and check the Disk Usage in Task Manager and it will no longer show you 100% disk usage anymore:-

I hope this helps people. I spent a long time in finding a solution to this problem.

Hope that resolves it.  I had tried it and seemed to work for a bit, but 100% came back until I changed the compatibility mode.

I dont have Skype, neither using Chrome. And still in 100%.

Just closed OneDrive and it went down. But suddenly it's going up and down again.

¿Maybe some Hardware issue? I don't understand why Microsoft isn't solving this.

I know I'm late to the party here, but the resolution on the following link seems to have done the trick for me:

Birzeit,  I posted about  a month ago what I did to fix problem.  After these latest updates I had to do it again, but worked for a month without issue.  And at times, I may have 20-30 Chrome tabs open at the same time..checking FB notifications :)   Anyway do the troubleshooted and when you get to choose software to troubleshoot let it go.  Pick your IDE controller and it will more than likely suggest putting it in Win8 compatibility mode.  It has worked for me, so might be worth a try.

What a very helpful comment! Nice of you to provide this insightful information about a post from last year when there are loads of other ideas.

If you had bothered to read the whole chain of posts you would realise that there are a variety of reasons and a variety of solutions. The bottom line is that no one fix will work for everyone. Yes it is an issue that one would have hoped that Microsoft would have fixed, but just like Apple with their recent IOS upgrade that caused havoc, the modern technological world is fraught with traps that even the best programmers miss.

If you are going to comment then make it constructive.

To every one else out there, look at the various fixes, try them all and one of them MAY help. In my case it was switching to an SSD on an older PC from an HDD. 100% down to 0% in idle. It works. What more can I say.
