How to fix 100% disk usage in Windows 10

This is caused by a common combination of Skype as well Google Chrome. Similar issue with other programs could also cause 100% disk usage. To fix this do the following:

Google Chrome:

In Google Chrome, go to Settings > Show Advanced Settings ... > Privacy > Prefetch resources to load pages more quickly

and untick it. See Figure-1 below:

Skype:

Make sure you have exited Skype and it is not running in the taskbar (if it is running in the taskbar then quit it).

Open Windows Explorer and open the following folder:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone"

Now right click "Skype.exe" file and then click "Properties" and open the "Security" tab.

Click the "Edit" button and then highlight "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" and place a tick in the "Write" box.

Click "Apply" and then "OK" and then "OK" again. See Figures-2 to Figure-6 below:

This is it, now run Skype and check the Disk Usage in Task Manager and it will no longer show you 100% disk usage anymore:-

I hope this helps people. I spent a long time in finding a solution to this problem.

    I believe method 2 is the manual way to do method 1 so if you used method 1 you should be able to go to the area in the registry as outlined in method 2 and the setting will be changed.

    The solution on this site has so far made a big improvement for me.

    I do understand the difference between "Method" and "Step" but I do not want to make guesses here as I have performed the Method 1 with my Windows 10 operating system (by the way, gpedit.msc is available in my case) and nothing happened.

    If they both needed to be performed I think they would say "Step 1" and "Step 2". Using the word "Method" indicates two ways of doing the same thing. In my experience "Method 2" need be used on Windows 10 Home since gpedit.msc is not available.

    @BaranMavzer. Thank you very much for very detailed instructions. I am just wandering if Merhod 1 and Method 2 are alternatives or both need to be performed?

    I have the solution. I tried all the methods mentioned here and other places. None of them worked, or worked for a short period.

     I will also paste here just in case:

    Method 1 – Group Policy Editor

    1. On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R at the same time to invoke a Run command.
    2. Type gpedit.mscand click OK.

    1. Go to Computer Configuration >  Administrative Templates >Windows Components > Data Collection and Preview Builds.

    4) Double-click Allow Telemetry.

    1. Select Disabled, then click OK.

    Method 2 – Registry Editor

    1) On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R at the same time to invoke a Run command.

    2) Type regeditin the box and click OK.

    3) Click YESwhen prompted by User Account Control.

    4) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >SOFTWARE > Policies > Microsoft > Windows >DataCollection

    5) Double-click Allow Telemetry.

    **NOTE:**If you can’t find Allow Telemetry, create it: Right-click on DataCollection and choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Then name the new value Allow Telemetry.

    6) Set Value date to 0 (zero) and click OK.

    This method worked for me after trying all the other methods.
