How to fix 100% disk usage in Windows 10

This is caused by a common combination of Skype as well Google Chrome. Similar issue with other programs could also cause 100% disk usage. To fix this do the following:

Google Chrome:

In Google Chrome, go to Settings > Show Advanced Settings ... > Privacy > Prefetch resources to load pages more quickly

and untick it. See Figure-1 below:

Figure-1

Skype:

Make sure you have exited Skype and it is not running in the taskbar (if it is running in the taskbar then quit it).

Open Windows Explorer and open the following folder:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone"

Now right click "Skype.exe" file and then click "Properties" and open the "Security" tab.

Click the "Edit" button and then highlight "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" and place a tick in the "Write" box.

Click "Apply" and then "OK" and then "OK" again. See Figures-2 to Figure-6 below:

This is it, now run Skype and check the Disk Usage in Task Manager and it will no longer show you 100% disk usage anymore:-

I hope this helps people. I spent a long time in finding a solution to this problem.

to be clear, I have done more than 10 clean installs past half year to fix this one particelar issue.. just to note that..

Hi Thanks for your reply. Are you saying you have performed 10 clean installs to fix this problem??

May I ask if a clean install fixed the problem and how long before the problem started again. Would really like to know what programs you are running. Have you ever tried a clean boot to see if you can find which program may be causing the 100% disk usage! Let me know how things go!

Hi Thanks for your reply! I use CCleaner to disable start up programs. Every App wants to be on start up ,as you can see in my screen shot. I allow 4 Apps to start up. Try disabling some of them and see if it makes a difference. You can always enable them again. The Apps will work just fine. They just won't be active until you click on one. Let me know how things go! I'm not a big fan of 360 total security. I run Windows Defender and Malwarebytes Pro! ![](https://learn-attachment.microsoft.com/api/attachments/ab6601ba-7482-4718-8fca-a8cd24b89d61?platform=QnA)

Hello. I am not totaly sure if its correct, but I downloaded an app or an antivirus to be exact called 360 total security. It cleans and gave sugestions of what should be off and what should be on, on my overall pc. As I followed its sugestions, it did help a small bit, im not stuck at 100% disk usage which is very great. But the issue isnt compleatly figured yet, I do reach 100% disk usage when running a bit harder programs/ games, but its better.

I will keep it like this till I find a new solution to fix the problem, thank you for the help anyway, I really apprechiate it :) have a good day.

I apprechiate the answer/answers.. but I recently just did. Also, not long ago I changed the harddisk, obviously didnt change anything, but I changed it to a seagate firecuda gaming sshd 2tb, wich is suposed to be much better and faster, no change from the old hdd one... Yesterday I did a clean install, the first thing I checked after it was done, was if the disk was still at 100%. And of course, it was, no downloads, no nothing on my computer. restarts didnt change anything either. . . :(
