How to fix 100% disk usage in Windows 10

This is caused by a common combination of Skype as well Google Chrome. Similar issue with other programs could also cause 100% disk usage. To fix this do the following:

Google Chrome:

In Google Chrome, go to Settings > Show Advanced Settings ... > Privacy > Prefetch resources to load pages more quickly

and untick it. See Figure-1 below:

Skype:

Make sure you have exited Skype and it is not running in the taskbar (if it is running in the taskbar then quit it).

Open Windows Explorer and open the following folder:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone"

Now right click "Skype.exe" file and then click "Properties" and open the "Security" tab.

Click the "Edit" button and then highlight "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" and place a tick in the "Write" box.

Click "Apply" and then "OK" and then "OK" again. See Figures-2 to Figure-6 below:

This is it, now run Skype and check the Disk Usage in Task Manager and it will no longer show you 100% disk usage anymore:-

I hope this helps people. I spent a long time in finding a solution to this problem.

    I am tired of reading all these comments, not just here but everywhere on the web.

    There is a solution that nobody mention.

    Change the bloody hard disk! your hard disk is malfunctioning, that's why you get the 100%. SIMPLE AS THAT!.

    Do it. You'll see.

    I, and many others here, HAVE replaced their hard drives.  Yet the problem persists on the new hard drive as it did on the old one. No matter if the hard drive is an SSD or not.

    This is not a hardware problem.  This is a Windows 10 problem.  People who have downgraded to Windows 7 find the problem goes away, without changing their hard drive.  People who abandon Windows entirely, by switching to some other OS, find the problem goes away, without changing their hard drive.

    Some people have never installed an antivirus and still had the problem, so that's not the solution.

    Sometimes the disk goes to 100%, and that's totally legit. One thing you could do other before replacing the "fcked" disk is to make sure that automatic defragmentation is off.

    And go to settings and Literally disable everything that is ON. 

    Personally I do not have any antivirus or antimalware installed in my computer, and it runs so fast with no trouble and of course no viruses. Only thing you need to have ON is Windows Defender. You don't need an antivirus. Windows Defender is more than enough. The best protection is to prevent, so guys stop clicking everywhere and downloading anything.

    I have found the solution that worked for all our pcs having this issue:

    We run Windows 10 with Kaspersky as our Anti-Virus (The latter has protected our enormous network since 2006, so i'm sticking with it)

    In Task Manager, under processes, right click your Anti-Virus, and select END PROCESS

    If you have a decent anti virus, it will close, and then re-open straight away. 

    As soon as I do this, my Disk usage goes back to 1% and I can resume my work.

    Just double-check that your AV has restarted itself - you dont want to go unprotected :)

    Thank you for your reply changed my bloody hard disk! same issue different hard disk didn't fix SIMPLE AS THAT!.
