How to fix 100% disk usage in Windows 10

This is caused by a common combination of Skype as well Google Chrome. Similar issue with other programs could also cause 100% disk usage. To fix this do the following:

Google Chrome:

In Google Chrome, go to Settings > Show Advanced Settings ... > Privacy > Prefetch resources to load pages more quickly

and untick it. See Figure-1 below:

Figure-1

Skype:

Make sure you have exited Skype and it is not running in the taskbar (if it is running in the taskbar then quit it).

Open Windows Explorer and open the following folder:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone"

Now right click "Skype.exe" file and then click "Properties" and open the "Security" tab.

Click the "Edit" button and then highlight "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" and place a tick in the "Write" box.

Click "Apply" and then "OK" and then "OK" again. See Figures-2 to Figure-6 below:

This is it, now run Skype and check the Disk Usage in Task Manager and it will no longer show you 100% disk usage anymore:-

I hope this helps people. I spent a long time in finding a solution to this problem.

I never use SSD and I will never do until this technology stops failing.

I have people calling me with the 100% disk problem. I have replaced their disks and never had that problem again.

1 in probably 50 will have the 100% disk problem, and it is resolved by replacing the disk again.

I have changed a lot of hard disks man in a lot of laptops and desktops. 1 out of 10 times yes that solves the problem but only for a while.

Now I start getting computers with new hard disks that start failing after 6 to 8 months.  And I start getting quite a lot of them.

This bloody operating system is malfunctioning badly.

That is the only point. Permanent solution? Change your damn operating system. Using an ssd does not solves the problem you just cannot feel it a lot.

I am tired of reading all these comments, not just here but everywhere on the web.

There is a solution that nobody mention.

Change the bloody hard disk! your hard disk is malfunctioning, that's why you get the 100%. SIMPLE AS THAT!.

    Do it. You'll see.

    09-19-2016 UPDATE:

Well, a couple days ago, Windows 10 update 1607 (Anniversary Update), downloaded to my computer. This download seemed to take much longer than the typical updates so I figured it must be a major change. I was hoping that something in 1607 would finally correct the 100% Disk Usage problem I was having (see my 09-13-2016 post). Well unfortunately, it did not.....

What it DID do was to add a "Limited Periodic Scanning" feature to Defender's list of "switchable" functions (Real-time Protection, Cloud-based Protection and Sample Submission).

Under the new "Limited Periodic Scanning" feature, it says:

"Even if you are using another anti-virus program, Windows Defender can periodically scan and notify you of threats on your PC"  Followed by the ON/OFF toggle switch.

The interesting thing here is that, while the download of "Spybot Search & Destroy" still successfully "Grey's-Out" all of Defender's other switches (successfully indicating they are no longer functional) the new "Limited Periodic Scanning" switch does not "Grey-Out."

So, after testing....I can see that while Update 1607 has not fixed the !00% Disk Usage issue and thankfully hasn't made it worse, I'm still able to "fix" the problem by using Spybot as my substitute program for Defender.

So-far so-good.....3 weeks of happy computing!!

    Todd

My issue started on the restart that was required after having installed McAfee... I haven't used them for years, always used Kaspersky or Panda over the past 10-15 years, but Panda wouldn't install on win10, and Kaspersky and myself had a falling out.

My issue; 90% of the time only happens on startup. The other 10% of the time (Bear in mind this has only started within the past 2 months) happens randomly while loading OR playing games developed with UNREAL engine.  These games are sort of load intensive, meaning as long as you are moving something is loading.

UNREAL coded games are not new to me at all  McAfee is.

Other than the installation of McAfee, there have been windows updates that forced themselves on my computers.. I keep updates off. Defender off. Notifications off. in fact I turn off everything I feel to be useless to me. If the PC goes south then I turn the most recent item back on to solve the problem.

That being said, I haven't looked into or removed the 2 most recent updates. They took forever to install and I assume they will just force install again since they did the first time.  I had not thought of grabbing other programs to see if the Win10 Defender and Notices would stay turned off.  Might try this. Might just uninstall the whole bloody mess of McAfee and the 2, well actually now it would be 3, more recent updates. I forgot about the one that decided to install on 2 of my desktops about 4AM 9/17..

The post mentioning that unless a switch is greyed out the sys app or setting is not really OFF; just laying in wait to attack opens up many possibilities.

Frankly, I have to agree that it is a MS issue that is triggered indirectly by some random assorted software programs we as users are silly enough to think MS will permit.  Paranoid?? Me?  NEVER!!!

If anyone has any other advice that has not been mentioned over the past 30 pages here, then by all means let me have it with both barrels. Sadly, I had already done most everything listed here as a fix, and more. I am about to restart to see if my most recent changes still give me the 5-15 min startup wait like always. To solve mine, when I am impatient I just end the process of the System groups having 17 and 11 processes in them and my PC drops to 5% disk usage by a 20 count.  I assume that an uninstall of McAfee would proffer me the same result, tho on a more permanent level.

Good Day All.. Like someone else said. I can't believe I just now fell upon this thread after 2 months plus tryin to deal.

At least it's good not to be alone lol..
