I recently purchased a custom built pc packed with windows 8.1 which I upgraded to Windows 10.

I installed Age of Mythology yesterday and when I try to run the game nothing happens. I have tried all compatibility suggestions and I get the same result.

I also have this same problem with black and white 2.

I have a NVIDIA Geforce gtx 980 graphics card installed in my pc.

Can you provide any suggestions please.

Thank you.

I just came across an old copy of AOM, still had the CD key on the back. Well I ran into the same troubles as everyone else and looked at the forums. Looks like this has been an issue for a while.

Option 1 to fix: I don't like this option due to the potential security issues that are inherent in secdrv.sys -

You can download the file, and use the digital override signing tool to "self-sign" it. ( The info is out there if you want to do this, just google it, but there are security issues. )

Option 2: Ok this fix is pretty easy, and a remnant of how games were pirated in the old days. Now it is just a good way to fix these issues.

    Here we go:-

    1. Install the game
    2. Go to the installation folder ("C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Age of Mythology) and run the file "autopatcher.exe" ( This will bring the game up to the final version.
    3. Download this file and extract ( It is a fixed.exe which bypasses the security and need for a CD to play http://www.gameburnworld.com/dl/dl.php?file=AgeOfMythologyv1.10FixedexeEng.rar
    4. Copy the aom.exe from the downloaded file and replace the one in the game directory.
    5. Done!
    6. Start the game, go to options and change the resolution.
    7. Enjoy :)

Dang it...got all excited but still nothing.

I followed the guide step by step but still nothing.  I have the CD version of AoM and when I click the desktop shortcut, a message pops up saying "would you like to allow this app to make changes to your system?", at which point I click "yes", and nothing happens.

    Argh

    Thanks.

I tried this and the program still won't open :(

Even after a couple of years it seems Windows 10 still won't play many older Microsoft games...I'm very disappointed.

Tried playing Age of Mythology and Empire Earth to no avail.

Your shortcut targets "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Age of Mythology\aom.exe", this is the path of your exe. The path can be followed by some optional features, in this case you add the option xres=640 after the path, outsite the "", with a space. That gives :

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Age of Mythology\aom.exe" xres=640
