Windows Update issue - Definition Update reoffered

This issue cropped up immediately after Windows Update installed two definition updates for Windows Defender consecutively. Windows Update started offering definition 1.193.3002.0 after the definition updates were installed, which was unexpected as a later version was installed through the updates. After installing 1.193.3002.0, Windows Update offered update 1.193.3192.0, and started offering 1.193.3002.0 immediately after installing 1.193.3192.0. I do have a recent system image backup (stored in another partition). I have tried manually resetting Windows Update (using the instructions I found on Microsoft Support) to no avail. I have restarted my computer multiple times. Both sfc and DISM found no problems with my computer. I downloaded and installed MBAM (free version) and ran a scan with it, which did not turn anything up.  Should I just restore my computer from my system image backup?

the Windows Defender UI indicated that update 1.193.3192.0 is installed. However, Windows Update is still offering (and automatically installing and looping) update 1.193.3002.0

I am running Windows 8.1 64bit with all updates (except for the pesky definition updates thingy) installed. I had a McAfee trial thingy installed quite some time ago, but I uninstalled it and ran MCPR (from the McAfee site) afterwards. I haven't made any changes to my computer in the past couple of weeks.

Turning Windows Defender off, restarting, and turning it back on did not resolve the problem. Dangit.

    1e. yes. I patched it and restarted. I created the system image after I verified that there were no additional updates available.

    1. Installed around February as a "second opinion" scanner. it is MBAM free. MBAM has never detected anything.

    6b. no. i set it to "download updates but let me choose whether to install them"

    2. No. I have never run any registry cleaners.
    3. Yes, but my current system image was created from another installation that did not experience issues. (I reset my computer)

    P.S. Why are so many ppl running Windows 8.1 experiencing problems with update 1.193.3002.0, and why is it being offered (if it is not being offered, my current installation restored from a system image created before the update was first offered would not be experiencing this issue)? 

    P.P.S. Why are clean installs of Windows 8.1 experiencing the same problem?

    P.P.P.S. PA bear, are you running Windows 8.1? If so, are you experiencing issues with update 1.193.3002.0?

    Dear all,

    The said problem has disappeared on my machine. Yesterday night, I got so frustrated with the issue that I hid the looping Def. Update (1.193.3002.0) and decided to wait for a solution.

    Today, when I checked for new updates, the latest Def. Update was installed. However, when I checked for that pesky little troublemaker in his cell ("Restore hidden updates") - guess what - it disappeared from there (as shown by this composition of three opened windows in my WU -- sorry for the poor resolution, you're going to have to download and zoom in).

    Now, I don't know whether this happened because I hid the update (rather unlikely, eh?), or because something has been done on the side of MS.  I'll continue to monitor the behaviour of my updates (perhaps it's only a temporary development, after all) and should like to know if any of you can report the disappearance of this issue.
