Windows Update issue - Definition Update reoffered

You could uninstall AVG, and get Defender going, and let it do all the updates it may want to.  You then keep Defender, or disable Defender and reinstall AVG.

It might pay you to get a second opinion about Malware on your machine too before you make any suggested changes.

windows defender is off I never turned it on.  I originally used Norton but when I had a problem with windows update and not being able to boot pc.  the repair shop removed Norton and put on avg which I have been using since...

When was the computer in the repair shop?

Did the repair shop doing anything other than replacing Norton with AVG?

Did the repair shop uninstall Norton & then run the Norton Removal Tool before they installed AVG Free (I assume)?

Did the computer come with a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [PICK ONE] preinstalled?

I would suggest you to run Microsoft safety scanner to check if the issue is causing due to any virus or malware.

Hiding the update will certainly stop the notification on the PC but I am having this problem on a network with a WSUS server so no matter what I do on the client I will have this one update showing as needed on WSUS.  I am having the issue with update 1.179.2500.0 instead of the 3002 that so many here are seeing.  I can't decline the update because it has not been superseded - well, I could decline but then I may not have protections required.

It sure seems like someone just forgot to put in whatever pieces let windows update know the update is not needed - maybe a file version not added to the right list or something.

See "Manually download the latest updates", and read the rest of the web page too.  See if manually downloading the "Definitions" breaks the loop?

Did anyone try my earlier suggestion to hide the update?

If you switch off Automatic Updates and set them up to not download and only notify you then it is possible to hide a troublesome update.  After doing such a thing you may return to your normal Automatic Update settings.

This is the one update that I would hide if it was my decision (as it is the oldest update).

Is there any action that you can perform on the WSUS Server to stop it pushing that update to just one machine?  I don't use WSUS myself so you might need some help from someone that does.

Any clues in these?
