Windows Update issue - Definition Update reoffered

This issue cropped up immediately after Windows Update installed two definition updates for Windows Defender consecutively. Windows Update started offering definition 1.193.3002.0 after the definition updates were installed, which was unexpected as a later version was installed through the updates. After installing 1.193.3002.0, Windows Update offered update 1.193.3192.0, and started offering 1.193.3002.0 immediately after installing 1.193.3192.0. I do have a recent system image backup (stored in another partition). I have tried manually resetting Windows Update (using the instructions I found on Microsoft Support) to no avail. I have restarted my computer multiple times. Both sfc and DISM found no problems with my computer. I downloaded and installed MBAM (free version) and ran a scan with it, which did not turn anything up. Should I just restore my computer from my system image backup?

the Windows Defender UI indicated that update 1.193.3192.0 is installed. However, Windows Update is still offering (and automatically installing and looping) update 1.193.3002.0

I am running Windows 8.1 64bit with all updates (except for the pesky definition updates thingy) installed. I had a McAfee trial thingy installed quite some time ago, but I uninstalled it and ran MCPR (from the McAfee site) afterwards. I haven't made any changes to my computer in the past couple of weeks.

Did you run the MCPR tool again after you restored the image a few days ago?
[Anecdotal evidence suggests the problem was on Microsoft's end and was related to an announced antimalware engine upgrade that was supposed to happen on the 16th but wasn't released until the 22nd or 23, depending on your time zone. YMMV]

Why in the world would people do all the things they are reporting to try and fix this is beyond me. It was clearly an issue on MS's end. I've learned long ago it is better not to mess with my system when 99% of the time the issue is not mine.
Was it that big a deal that the definition was being reoffered? I could see that other definitions were being installed so I was fairly confident my system was protected (well as well as it can be protected with the poor performing Windows Defender).
Well at first we didn't know what was going on, didn't know it was a problem with Windows Update/an update, so we were kind of ruling out other things, before we all found this thread and saw that it was probably universal.
Regarding it being a big deal, I hope it wasn't, like quite possible there was no meaningful problem/risk, but you never know. It kind of is a huge deal any time Windows Update goes wonky (as it did a month or so ago on patch Tuesday with one particular patch). You don't know for sure what's going on and whether you're really protected, etc.

2015-03-23T15:14:21+00:00 Open windows defender and update it from there. Or go to Microsoft security center and manually download and install the latest definition.
Update windows updater and then manually check for updates. If it was an issue with windows or specifically windows update the only way yo fix it would be install the update that corrects the issue. If you installed all the current updates then make sure you restart.

All updates applied as per automatic updating ... (sorry for all the "updates").
The damn problem was from MS end .... not "users" end .....
Because that's what he does. Run.
