This issue cropped up immediately after Windows Update installed two definition updates for Windows Defender consecutively. Windows Update started offering definition 1.193.3002.0 after the definition updates were installed, which was unexpected as a later version was installed through the updates. After installing 1.193.3002.0, Windows Update offered update 1.193.3192.0, and started offering 1.193.3002.0 immediately after installing 1.193.3192.0. I do have a recent system image backup (stored in another partition). I have tried manually resetting Windows Update (using the instructions I found on Microsoft Support) to no avail. I have restarted my computer multiple times. Both sfc and DISM found no problems with my computer. I downloaded and installed MBAM (free version) and ran a scan with it, which did not turn anything up. Should I just restore my computer from my system image backup?

the Windows Defender UI indicated that update 1.193.3192.0 is installed. However, Windows Update is still offering (and automatically installing and looping) update 1.193.3002.0

I am running Windows 8.1 64bit with all updates (except for the pesky definition updates thingy) installed. I had a McAfee trial thingy installed quite some time ago, but I uninstalled it and ran MCPR (from the McAfee site) afterwards. I haven't made any changes to my computer in the past couple of weeks.

Turning Windows Defender off, restarting, and turning it back on did not resolve the problem. Dangit.

Turn Windows Defender on or off
You could also look at disabling any of the Windows Defender services in Services.
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools\Services
Most of the type of errors you are experiencing seem to fix themself over a period of time.
same problem everytime I load pc the update is back. I had hid it since it appeared as I use avg free and have had no problems with it. I tried to hide it in windows update in metro as well still comes back.
I was a very early 10041 updater. I did see the offer for another d/l of 10041, perhaps more than once. I just asked for this d/l again and it immediately went away. I do use Windows Defender and do all updates as soon as they are offered. Perhaps I was just lucky but this issue seems to have gone away for most.

Sounds like you have issues that aren't similar to the original subject of this post. You should create a new question with your unique issue to get better help.
The error that was cited means that it tried to get files but the source was missing. in computer terms the target would be your computer and the source would be an install disk, windows update or other media.
Try running DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth as suggested here http://www.vindamedia.com/windows/help/windows-8-general-errors
I still have the same problem.
Windows Defender is turned off on my laptop from the beginning.
Every time I go to shut off my laptop it asks to update and restart...... this is really getting beyond annoying !!
When is this going to be fixed?
