Windows Update issue - Definition Update reoffered

This issue cropped up immediately after Windows Update installed two definition updates for Windows Defender consecutively. Windows Update started offering definition 1.193.3002.0 after the definition updates were installed, which was unexpected as a later version was installed through the updates. After installing 1.193.3002.0, Windows Update offered update 1.193.3192.0, and started offering 1.193.3002.0 immediately after installing 1.193.3192.0. I do have a recent system image backup (stored in another partition). I have tried manually resetting Windows Update (using the instructions I found on Microsoft Support) to no avail. I have restarted my computer multiple times. Both sfc and DISM found no problems with my computer. I downloaded and installed MBAM (free version) and ran a scan with it, which did not turn anything up.  Should I just restore my computer from my system image backup?

the Windows Defender UI indicated that update 1.193.3192.0 is installed. However, Windows Update is still offering (and automatically installing and looping) update 1.193.3002.0

I am running Windows 8.1 64bit with all updates (except for the pesky definition updates thingy) installed. I had a McAfee trial thingy installed quite some time ago, but I uninstalled it and ran MCPR (from the McAfee site) afterwards. I haven't made any changes to my computer in the past couple of weeks.

Turning Windows Defender off, restarting, and turning it back on did not resolve the problem. Dangit.

    I came across this very soon after it started and have spent hours trying to fix it.

    But have only just come across this thread.

    To me it is a side issue since I am really trying to fix the Windows 8.1 disk activity 100% problem that so many have also reported. I did not notice the issue when updates were set fully automatic and was obviously hoping the continual updating accounted for the 100% disk activity.

    I am just glad others are now reporting this particular update issue and it is not just me!

    I have tried manually updating using AntiMalware Definition Update, Fixit on Updates, Windows 8.1 troubleshooting updates (it always reports errors and then says they are fixed), clearing SoftwareDistribution and caroot2, I have run Disk Cleanup but only after noticing the problem (as part of attempt to fix), have also run updates from Defender itself.

    Hi, all solutions as posted in this thread are tried by me but without any result. I've tried it on all my personal devices and all show the same problem/effect.

    After installation of the latest build still Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602 (Definition 1.193.3002.0) is asked for to install and when running manual update each time there is a toggle effect between the latest build and 1.193.3002.0.

    Also all my customers with Windows Defender running are having the same issue as I found out this morning by looking at the Kaseya Monitoring Logs in case of software distribution and windows updates.

    Can this be resolved in any other way soon?

    I did not run Disk Cleanup.

    P.S. Is there any reason an old definition update might be offered for download even when a newer version exists?

    FWIW:

    Did you run Disk Cleanup?

    I have no idea if this is related BUT: On Windows 7 lots of people have a similar problem with 2 KBs being reoffered over and over again when Windows Update Cleanup is checked when doing a Disk Cleanup...

    After renaming SoftwareDistribution and catroot2, Windows downloads definition update 1.193.3002.0 along with the latest definition update when it checks for updates. This indicates that Microsoft is still offering definition update 1.193.3002.0 for download. From this, we can conclude that Microsoft messed something up.
