I don't want to upgrade to Win 10 (from Win7) just yet but when I run Windows Update, the Windows 10 upgrade starts. I can see there are many Win7 updates waiting too but cancelling the Win10 upgrade means no other updates get installed. I've uninstalled KB2990214 and have rerun Windows Update (as suggested in other threads) but starting Windows Update still starts the upgrade.
Is there any way to totally remove the Win10 upgrade so I can do the rest of the Win7 updates? When I look at updates I've hidden, I can see "Upgrade to Windows 10 Home" and it's not selected. Thanks in advance!

It sounds like your computer was past the point at which the steps above work -- BEFORE installation began.
In that case, I hope others on this forum can help you.
I have observed in this forum more people that I can count in your situation. I suspect in most cases, a Windows 7 re-install will be necessary.
I could not agree with you more on your observations about the behavior of Microsoft.

Interesting thread. Based on other advice I've found online, I have hidden the following updates: 2882822, 3035583, 3068708, 3075249 and 3080149. That keeps the Windows 10 gremlins away most of the time, but occasionally one of these updates falls off the hidden list, and I see the flag on my taskbar again. Then it's another 20 minutes of uninstalling and rebooting to keep Win10 from getting its hooks in too deep. I wish I could bill Microsoft for my time.
And none of this should be happening. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on a Dell Latitude D630, an excellent but 9 year old system that I've tweaked with 8GB memory and a terabyte of disk. Win7 runs great on it, and I expect to run it until the OS reaches end of support in 2020. Thing is, neither Dell nor Microsoft has certified the D630 for Windows 10, so Microsoft is trying its hardest to push Windows 10 onto hardware nobody in charge has ever tested. If they manage to squeeze past and install Win10 and it bricks my system, who is responsible? Microsoft never said it would work.

Yikes .. so they're not exactly checking hardware specifics when offering the upgrade. I'm just glad to hear that you're not in the same situation as me and a few others where Windows Update must be turned off for all eternity .. lol (or until the decision is made to upgrade to Win10).
Side note: one of the updates you mentioned up there ↑ was installed on my laptop, so I'm uninstalling it and trying Windows Update again just in case. I'll update the thread if I make any progress but I'm not expecting it to help.

It appears the tool you're suggesting removes the nag from the taskbar. We've been talking about something much more complex.
